David Kelsey Cushman

PORTLAND – David Kelsey Cushman, 70, loving father and grandfather, went peacefully into the arms of his Precious Savior in Portland on Friday, July 29, 2022.

David was born to Kelsey and Mildred Cushman in Portland on Nov. 12, 1951. He graduated from Calais Memorial High School in 1970 before attending Berkshire Christian College in Lenox, Mass. David cherished his memories at Berkshire, especially playing on the basketball team for Coach Peters and all his adventures with his close friends known as “the zoo.”

After college David started his career in auto parts sales. A great memory of his career was working for his brother, Al, in Windham at Al’s Auto Supply.

The highlight of David’s life were his beloved children, Kelsey and Ryan. He was a devoted father. He conveyed his love and commitment to his kids in so many ways, but especially by showing up at every opportunity to cheer them on and by affirming them often with words of his love and pride. David welcomed Kelsey’s husband, Joshua Presley, into the family. With great pride David would introduce Josh not as son-in-law, but as one of his kids.

Being a grampie came naturally to David. He loved spending time with his grandsons, Hudson and Holden. Some of his favorite activities were snuggles in the recliner and watching Hudson play sports. Grampie loved coaching Hudson on perfecting his baseball swing.

David followed Jesus as his Savior at a young age and walked in his faith all of his life. He enjoyed serving in his local church and would speak to others about his faith often. David’s favorite childhood and adult memories were made in the family cottage in Friendship, Maine. He loved to talk about his memories as a child going lobstering with his grandfather and playing baseball with his cousin, Warren. As an adult, he loved returning to the cottage every summer with his own family. David enjoyed watching the Boston Red Sox and Nascar races.

Jimbo the cat was a constant companion and source of comfort for David, as his health declined.

David was loved by many. His positive outlook, generous spirit, and kind heart left an impression wherever he went. He will be missed by all who knew him.

David was predeceased by his parents, Kelsey and Mildred Cushman of Cape Elizabeth; and sister, Diane Guay of Cape Elizabeth. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Kelsey (Joshua) Presley of Waterboro, and Ryan Cushman of Saco; grandsons Hudson and Holden of Waterboro; brother Albert (LauRinda) Cushman of Friendship, brother-in-law Paul of Portland; cousin Warren (Sandra) Conary of Acton; former spouse and friend Lori (Kevin) Whittemore of Waterboro; and many special nieces and nephews.

David’s family would like to thank Maine Medical Center, specifically CICU and R7, for the excellent care and compassion they offered David.

David’s friends and family are invited to share happy memories and celebrate his life on Monday, August 8, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Lakeside Community Church, 1248 Sokokis Trail, Waterboro, with refreshments to follow. Graveside service at 2 p.m. at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress Street, Portland.
