‘Tragedy In The Skies’ at Grange

Grange member and local historian Ken Moody will share some World War II history when Highland Lake Grange meets at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, at 9 Hardy Road.

Moody will tell the stories of four young Westbrook men who joined the Army Air Corps during WWII. They were lifelong friends who all heeded the call of duty and experienced disaster during their service, the Grange said in a press release.

There is no admission charge, but donations will be accepted for the Westbrook Veterans Relief Fund operated by Westbrook Veteran Services Office.

Refreshments will be served.

Walker Friends’ summer outing in Buxton

Friends of Walker Memorial Library will attend the Buxton 250th birthday celebration on Saturday, Aug. 6, for its annual summer outing.

Kelly Day of the friends’ group said they will travel to Tory Hill to take in the car show at the Brewster Mansion, parade, and church craft fair along with lunch.


“We will be carpooling from the Walker Memorial Library parking lot at 800 Main St. Westbrook – meeting at 9 a.m. Or, if anyone wants to meet us there in Buxton, we will meet at the Tory Hill Meetinghouse on the steps, and take a Friends of the Library summer trip picture at 10:15 a.m.,” Day said.

Last year, the group met for its annual summer outing at The Stockhouse Restaurant in Westbrook.

Concerts schedule

Gina & TREFC will be in concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4, at Vallee Square.

Brother Blues will perform at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5, at Conant Homestead, 99 Conant St. Farm opens at 6 p.m. Suggested donation $10.

Rosewood Avenue will appear at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Riverbank Park.

50 years ago

The American Journal on July 26, 1972, reported that Mr. and Mrs. Ken Cumberland traveled to Philadelphia to visit their son, John, who was a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. While in Philly, the Cumberlands watched three baseball games.
