Quincy Nieporte homered in the seventh and eighth innings as the Erie SeaWolves rallied Sunday for a 6-4 Eastern League win over the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.
Nieporte tied the game 4-4 when he led off the seventh with his 25th home run on the season. Dillon Dingler doubled home Wenceel Perez for the go-ahead run later in the seventh, and Nieporte added his second home run in the eighth.
Stephen Scott and Izzy Wilson homered for the Sea Dogs.
AUTO RACING
INDYCAR: Scott Dixon passed Mario Andretti for second on IndyCar’s all-time wins list with a victory in the messy Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, Tennessee, and pulled within reach of a record-tying seventh series championship.
Dixon overcame a poor qualifying effort, damage to his Chip Ganassi Racing car, a crash-fest around the downtown streets of Nashville and finally a drag race against Scott McLaughlin in a two-lap push to the finish. He won for the 53rd time of his career and jumped to second in the points standings, just six points behind Will Power with three races remaining.
McLaughlin, for Team Penske, wound up second for a 1-2 finish for the drivers from New Zealand. The .1067-second margin of victory was the fourth-closest in IndyCar history on a road or street course.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Erling Haaland scored twice in his Premier League debut as Manchester City opened its title defense with a 2-0 win at West Ham.
Haaland scored from the penalty spot in the first half after being brought down by the goalkeeper in the area, then struck again with a clinical low finish in the 65th minute
• Manchester United stumbled to a 2-1 loss at home against Brighton in Erik ten Hag’s first Premier League game as manager, dispelling any notion that the Dutch coach could provide an instant fix to the many issues that plagued the team last season.
Ten Hag decided to leave Cristiano Ronaldo out of his starting lineup after the Portugal star only played 45 minutes in preseason amid reports he wants to leave for a Champions League club.
Ronaldo entered early in the second half, but United’s only breakthrough was an own goal.
BASKETBALL
WNBA: Candace Parker scored 18 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and tipped a pass to Emma Meesseman for a 3-pointer in the closing seconds to help the Chicago Sky beat the visiting Connecticut Sun, 94-91, and set a franchise record for wins in a season.
Courtney Vandersloot had 20 points, five assists and four steals for Chicago (25-8). Meesseman and Allie Quigley added 15 points apiece and Kahleah Copper scored 11.
• Brittney Sykes scored 21 points, including a driving layup in the closing seconds, and the Los Angeles Sparks kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 79-76 win at the Washington Mystics.
Los Angeles (13-20), which snapped a six-game losing streak, is one game behind Atlanta and Phoenix for the last two playoff spots with a week left in the regular season.
• Kayla McBride scored 20 points and the Minnesota Lynx used a fourth-quarter run to keep their playoff hopes alive by beating the visiting Atlanta Dream, 81-71.
TENNIS
CITI OPEN: Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios ended a three-year title drought by claiming the trophy at the site of his last triumph, saving the only break point he faced in a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Yoshihito Nishioka in Washington.
Earlier, Liudmila Samsonova won her second career WTA title by coming back to beat Kaia Kanepi, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
COLLEGES
MEN’S HOCKEY: Michigan promoted Brandon Naurato to interim coach for the 2022-23 season, two days after cutting ties with coach Mel Pearson following an investigation into the program.
An investigation that was given to the school in May revealed that Pearson pressured student-athletes to lie about COVID-19 contact tracing during the 2020-21 season.
Naurato, a former Michigan player, was on Pearson’s staff last season after he was a player development consultant with the Detroit Red Wings for three seasons.
