Mary Lou Smith of Scarborough has been named Volunteer of the Year by The Purple Ribbon Awards, sponsored by Theresa’s Fund/DomesticShelters.org to honors domestic violence advocates, programs, shelters and survivors nationwide.

Smith is being honored for her work with  “Finding Our Voices,  a nonprofit group of domestic abuse survivors with the goal of breaking the silence, stigma and cycle of domestic abuse in Maine.

Smith has put up posters and handed out bookmarks throughout the state to spread awareness about the Finding Our Voices campaign, according to a press release. She also facilitates a weekly online support group and book club at the women’s unit of Windham Prison.
