The crew of Backstabber, captained by Pete Speeches, landed a 628-pound giant bluefin to capture the Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza for the third consecutive year.

More than 60 boats competed in the three-day tournament last weekend out of Spring Point Marina in South Portland. Speeches and his crew won $12,500 and the Casco Bay Cup for the largest fish.

Proceeds from the event, now in its fourth year, go toward community college scholarships for students enrolled in trades and marine science programs, internships for students from the University of Maine working at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute and an endowment with the University of Maine Foundation supporting bluefin tuna research at the UMaine Pelagic Fisheries Lab at GMRI.
