Comprehensive Plan update

The city of South Portland is updating its Comprehensive Plan. Comprehensive Plans, often referred to as comp plans, represent the community’s vision for long term growth and development and serve as a guide for all planning decisions. They provide a vision, goals and policies that cover areas such as land use, natural and water resources, economy, housing, recreation, transportation and more.

The comp plan update will be a two-year effort to help define a new, shared vision for the community, with goals and an action plan for how to realize that vision.

Here in Maine, the state mandates that cities and towns update their comp plans every 12 years, so this is your chance to voice how you want South Portland to grow through the year 2040. South Portland has just begun the public engagement process and is hiring a consultant to write the plan, which is expected to be adopted by 2025.

Want to get involved? Visit southportland2040.com. Learn about South Portland’s current comp plan (adopted in 2012), the comp plan update process, and all the ways to have a say in the future of South Portland.
