Homing pigeons in wartime

Jon Bernhard of Westbrook will take part in a program about the use of homing pigeons during wartime when the Westbrook Historical Society meets at 10 a.m. Sept. 10, at the Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

Elizabeth Macalaster of Brunswick, who is the author of “War Pigeons,” will speak.

Bernhard, who has a pigeon loft in his backyard on Carlson Street, plans to bring a few of his 30 to 40 pigeons to release.

“In the future, he’d like to try racing his birds in an official pigeon race,” according to information released by Macalaster. “For now, he trains them regularly, looking to build them up to flights of over 100 miles.”

Concert schedule

A Queen tribute concert is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at Valle Square.

Band Beyond Description will play at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Riverbank Park, 677 Main St.

Black Feathers performs at 7 p.m. Sept. 2, at the Conant Homestead, 99 Conant St.

The American Journal Aug. 23, 1972, reported that Kristine Francoeur, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bertrand Francoeur of Giles Street, had a slumber party for her 9th birthday.
