BASEBALL

David Hamilton and Wilyer Abreu homered and three pitchers combined on a five-hitter for the Portland Sea Dogs in a 4-1 Eastern League win Sunday over the Hartford Yard Goats at Hadlock Field.

Hamilton hit his 10th home run of the season in the first inning, and Abreu put the Sea Dogs ahead for good in the third inning with his first homer since he was acquired from Houston in the Christian Vazquez trade.

Brian Van Belle (5-4) gave up only three hits and an unearned run in five innings. Cody Scroggins and Brendan Nail each pitched two innings as the Sea Dogs maintained a half-game lead over Somerset in the Northeast Division second-half standings.

LITTLE LEAGUE: Hawaii got back-to-back homers from Kekoa Payanal and Kama Angell in the first inning, sparking a 13-3 win over Curacao in just four innings in the championship game of the Little League World Series at South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Hawaii starter Jaron Lancaster was dominant once again as he threw all four innings and struck out 10 Curacao hitters.

COLLEGES

WOMEN’S SOCCER: Abby Kraemer converted a penalty kick for her second goal of the season and produced another goal with a shot that resulted in a deflection for an own goal as Maine (2-0-1) remained undefeated with a 4-0 win over Bryant (1-3).

Halle Rogers and Susannah Gaines also scored. Rogers opened the scoring off a corner kick just 9:23 into the match.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Jewell Lloyd scored 26 points, including Seattle’s final six, and the Storm edged the Las Vegas Aces 76-73 in Las Vegas to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five semifinals.

Lloyd made a go-ahead free throw with 1:16 to play, then a jumper for a three-point lead with 34 seconds remaining. She had 10 of Seattle’s 16 points in the fourth quarter.

Breanna Stewart added 24 points and six rebounds for the fourth-seeded Storm, while Tina Charles finished with 13 points and 18 rebounds. Sue Bird had 12 assists.

Chelsea Gray scored 21 points for the top-seeded Aces. Kelsey Plum added 20, but missed a tying 3-point attempt with 2.9 seconds to play.

• DeWanna Bonner had 15 points and nine rebounds to lead the Connecticut to a 68-63 win over the Chicago Sky in Game 1 of their WNBA semifinals series.

Jonquel Jones scored 12 points and also grabbed nine rebounds for the Sun, Alyssa Thomas had 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, and Brionna Jones added 12 points.

Candace Parker had 19 points and 18 rebounds for the Sky, and Kahleah Copper scored 13 points on 5-for-10 shooting.

LPGA: Paula Reto won the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open for her first LPGA Tour victory, closing with a 4-under 67 for a one-stroke victory over Nelly Korda and Hye-Jin Choi in Ottawa, Ontario.

Reto, a 32-year-old South African, finished at 19-under 265 at Ottawa Hunt and Golf Club.
Korda missed a chance to reclaim the No. 1 ranking, also shooting a 67.

U.S. SENIOR WOMEN’S OPEN: Jill McGill won the U.S. Senior Women’s Open in Kettering, Ohio, closing with an even-par 73 for a one-stroke victory over Leta Lindley.

McGill, 50, finished at 3-under 289. She also won the 1993 U.S. Women’s Amateur and 1994 U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links.

Lindley shot a 74.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Thriston Lawrence won the European Masters in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, with a steady par on the first playoff hole before Matt Wallace missed a 5-foot putt.

Lawrence, 25, earned his second title this season. He carded a 1-under 69 for an 18-under total of 262.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Steve Stricker won The Ally Challenge in Grand Blanc, Michigan, for his second PGA Tour Champions victory of the season and ninth overall.

Stricker closed with a 5-under 67 – rebounding from a bogey on the 12th with four straight birdies – for a one-stroke victory over Brett Quigley.

Quigley finished with a 68.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Championship leader Max Verstappen quickly carved his way through the field from 14th place to win the Belgian Grand Prix.

Verstappen’s lead in the standings is now 93 points over Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez, who finished second. Charles Leclerc dropped to third in another poor Ferrari showing.

Carlos Sainz Jr. started from the pole for Ferrari but finished third. Leclerc crossed the line in fifth place but was dropped to sixth after he was handed a five-second penalty for speeding in pit lane.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was shot during an attempted robbery or carjacking, the team said.

The 23-year-old former Alabama player was taken to a hospital with what the team called non-life-threatening injuries.

D.C. police reported a shooting in the northeast section of the city and said it was on the lookout for two possible suspects.

Robinson, a third-round draft pick, was was expected to start for the Commanders, likely earning the job over incumbent Antonio Gibson.

• Defensive end Trey Flowers intends to sign a contract with the Miami Dolphins this week, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said.

Flowers earned two Super Bowl rings in four seasons with the New England Patriots, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2015.

• Joe Flacco threw a pick-6 and the New York Jets’ starting offense mostly struggled while playing into the second quarter against mainly Giants defensive backups in a 31-27 victory.

Flacco, likely to open the regular season at quarterback for the injured Zach Wilson, made his preseason debut and finished 7 of 12 for 76 yards and an interception returned for a touchdown by Austin Calitro in his four series.

Jets fourth-stringer Chris Streveler led his third straight fourth-quarter winning drive. He marched the Jets (3-0) down the field in the waning moments and found a wide-open Calvin Jackson Jr. for the go-ahead 5-yard touchdown with 22 seconds left.

Giants backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor was carted off the field after sustaining a back injury in the first quarter.

• Mitch Trubisky presented a compelling case to be Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback, leading a crisp 92-yard touchdown drive to end the first half in a 19-9 victory over the Detroit Lions.

SOCCER

ENGLAND: Harry Kane moved into a tie for third place on the all-time Premier League scoring list with two goals as Tottenham won 2-0 at Nottingham Forest.

Kane scored in either half to draw level with Andrew Cole at 187 goals – behind only Alan Shearer (260) and Wayne Rooney (208) – as his side’s unbeaten start to the season continued.

MLS: Daniel Aguirre and Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez scored goals in the first 15 minutes and the visiting Los Angeles Galaxy held on for a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution.

Aguirre took a pass from Hernandez and scored in the 4th minute to give the LA Galaxy (11-11-4) an early lead. Hernandez scored 11 minutes later to make it 2-0. Ricard Puig Marti picked up an assist on Hernandez’s team-high 12th goal of the season. Aguirre’s netter was his first.

New England (8-9-10) didn’t score until Carles Gil found the net in the 82nd minute. Tommy McNamara assisted on Gil’s sixth goal this season.

Jonathan Bond had seven saves for the Galaxy. Djordje Petrovic saved three shots for the Revolution.

The Galaxy ended a four-game losing streak on the road and handed the Revolution their first home loss in their last 10 matches and just their fifth defeat in the past 30 at home.

CYCLING

SPANISH VUELTA: Remco Evenepoel dropped his main challengers on the grueling final ascent in Les Praeres to increase his overall lead.

South African Louis Meintjes won the ninth stage, crossing the line more than a minute ahead of Evenepoel, who launched his attack about 1.8 miles from the summit and extended his lead ahead of Monday’s rest day and Tuesday’s time trial in Alicante.

The Belgian rider stretched his lead over Enric Mas from 28 seconds to 1:12. His advantage over three-time defending champion Primoz Roglic went up by more than 50 seconds and was at nearly two minutes.
