BIDDEFORD —  Joseph Lovejoy has been promoted to a new role — assistant director of Public Works. He began his new job Aug. 16.

Lovejoy joined the department as a laborer in 2010 and moved through the organization to operator and then street supervisor, where he managed day-to-day tasks for the department’s Street Division, city officials said in a statement. For the past year, Lovejoy has served as operations manager, where he was responsible for managing long-term projects and keeping the department’s operations on track seasonally.

“Anybody that has had the opportunity to work with Joe knows about his dedication to our department and his knowledge of the city,” said Public Works Director Jeff Demers. “He has embraced every opportunity for growth that he has been offered so far, and I look forward to seeing how he continues to succeed in his new position.”

In his new leadership role, Lovejoy will assist Demers with oversight of daily operations of all divisions within the department, preparing paving and sidewalk needs, overseeing the Recycling/Transfer Station and Parks Department, Woodlawn Cemetery, and more.

“I enjoy working for the City of Biddeford and all of its citizens, and I’m excited to take on my new position,” said Lovejoy. “The future of the city has lots of exciting things ahead, and it’s great to be a part of it. Public Works has been very busy this year completing some large jobs in-house, which has been very rewarding for everyone involved. I look forward to seeing more major projects accomplished over the coming years.”
