On the recent news story about Maine community college students having difficulty finding available housing (Aug. 28), I do have to ask why Maine community colleges have student dormitories.

Isn’t the idea behind community colleges to have colleges geographically situated for students to attend without traveling great distances? In southern Maine, we have Southern Maine and York County community colleges. Yes, it will involve commuting, but that is already true for Maine’s existing public and private universities and colleges.

The public cost and expense of student dormitories and room and board should be primarily for Maine’s four-year state institutions, which do have to find housing for out-of-state, international and college students from across our large state. While Maine’s community colleges may accept out-of-state or international students, isn’t this outside the “community” mission of our community colleges?
