Maine gubernatorial race

As Governor Janet Mills enters the final weeks of her campaign for a second term, the Republican Governors Association is running a TV advertisement against her specifically about her purported education policies and programs.

I am a retired attorney who was for many years a member of the Maine Council of School Board Attorneys. In that role I met and worked with school board members, administrators and teachers in many areas of our State. These committed members of our communities did then and now give their best efforts to provide Maine’s students the best possible, fully rounded and appropriate education to prepare them for a productive life in our towns and cities. I had the privilege of working with attorney Janet Mills on a couple of cases on school matters during which she exhibited her commitment to the positive education of some of our students.

The currently circulating advertisement wrongly implies that Governor Mills advances educational ideas and policies detrimental to our children. If the Republican candidate for governor had real character, he would denounce these advertisements.

These advertisements constitute slander of Maine’s teachers, administrators, school boards and our Governor. They do not accurately present what is presented in Maine’s classrooms.

Who’s to blame

In response to Michael Reagan’s guest column published on Oct. 12, I will admit there are financial struggles we are all facing. However, let us remember how we got here, and why we are experiencing these struggles. When Biden became President, Trump had cut $15 trillion in taxes spanning over 10 years, and when he left office, he created the third-highest national deficit (in terms of the overall budget) only behind Abraham Lincoln and George W. Bush.

Trump left office with a net loss of 2.9 million jobs and an unemployment rate of 6.3%. He is the only president in history to lose more jobs than he created, including WWI and WWII. Our international trade deficit went up over 40% in his four years and was the highest since 2008.

Under the Biden leadership we are at a 3.5% unemployment rate. In June, our domestic crude oil production reached 12 million barrels per day, a national record. He reestablished our broken relationships with Europe and abroad. He led the first bipartisan infrastructure bill in my lifetime. Lastly, integrity counts. Your father had integrity and granted over 3 million illegal immigrants’ amnesty. Trump is just days away from indictment. I would ask you to work collaboratively to resolve the challenges and not point a finger.
