This newspaper’s recent article about unruly fan behavior at local sports events (“Officials work to curb unruly behavior by students at high school games,” Oct. 5) suggested that the behavior was related to students being out of school and not having appropriate role models during COVID-19. Maybe so, but I suspect it has more to do with the rampant lack of civil discourse between adults in prominent roles.
It’s ironic that the paper also reported that, during Tuesday’s Oct. 4 gubernatorial debate, Paul LePage angrily called Gov. Janet Mills a liar (“First Maine gubernatorial debate kept fact checkers busy,” Oct. 5). Apparently Mr. LePage doesn’t know how to question someone’s position, someone’s record or someone’s opinion without calling them a name. Could that explain why kids are more inclined to engage in bullying, disrespectful and ridiculing behavior?
