‘The Lifespan of a Fact’
7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday, 3 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday. Through Oct. 30. St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress St., Portland, $30. goodtheater.com
Good Theater is kicking off its 20th season with a show that premiered on Broadway in 2018. Directed by Stephen Underwood, “The Lifespan of a Fact” stars Mark Rubin, Jay Mack and Denise Poirier. Mack’s Jim Fingal is a recent Harvard graduate fact-checker working at the storied yet floundering New York magazine. Rubin’s John D’Agata has written a potentially magazine-saving essay about the suicide of a teenage boy. What ensues is a funny yet riveting conflict that pits the facts against the truth.

‘Giselle’

The Sanford Performing Arts Center kicks off its season with a pair of Portland Ballet performances. “Giselle” is a timeless tale that delves into love, betrayal, life, death, vengeance and forgiveness. The dancers will tell the story of Giselle and Albrecht and how his betrayal lands her in an early grave where she has to contend with the underworld torment of the creepy Willis. “Giselle” is perfect for this time of year as there’s plenty of haunting mixed in with the romance.
