Chloe Arsenault scored the winner 6:18 into overtime as the University of Southern Maine rallied for a 4-3 field hockey win over Plymouth State Tuesday at Plymouth, New Hampshire.
Sage Drinkwater sent the game to overtime as she hammered home a pass from Adelle Surette with eight seconds to play in regulation for the Huskies (13-6, 10-2 Little East).
Jenna Stowell, Caroline Coleman and Taylor Healey scored for the Panthers (10-5, 8-3), who led 3-1 at halftime.
BATES 6, COLBY 2: Kami Lambert had three goals as the Bobcats (9-6, 5-5 NESCAC) rolled past the Mules (6-9, 1-9) at Waterville.
Maria Femia had a pair of goals, with Molly Harmon also scoring for Bates.
Pernilla Shaw and Jackie Mortell scored for Colby.
BOWDOIN 3, TUFTS 2: Faith Jennings scored the winning goal 1:30 into the second overtime as the Polar Bears (11-4, 6-4) outlasted the Jumbos (10-5, 7-3) at Medford, Massachusetts.
Jill Cloonan and Caroline Higgins each had second-quarter goals for Bowdoin.
Reegan McCluskey had both goals for Tufts.
MEN’S SOCCER
BATES 1, COLBY 0: Cesar Hoover scored with 15:52 to play in regulation as the Bobcats (7-5-4, 3-5-3 NESCAC) edged the Mules (4-5-7, 1-5-5) at Waterville.
Nico Hessel had a pair of saves for Bates, and Matt Morin had one save for Colby.
ENDICOTT 3, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Joe Mepham scored on a Max Karkos feed in the 52nd minute to break a scoreless tie and the Gulls (12-4-4, 7-1-1 CCC) pulled away from the Nor’easters (0-16-2, 0-9) at Biddeford.
Jason Brodeau and Karkos scored goals in the span of 2:05 for Endicott late in the contest.
Triston O’Hagan stopped five shots for UNE, and Kyle Rosa turned aside three shots for shutout.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
COLBY 1, BATES 1: Elizabeth Patrick received the ball from Mollie Franklin just outside the 18 and knocked it home to break a scoreless tie for the Bobcats with 8:37 to play in regulation, but Sophie Webb answered from Kaleigh Quinn 2:03 later as the Mules rallied to secure a draw at Waterville.
Colby (5-9-1, 0-9-1) got five saves from MK Marshall, and Ruby Reimann stopped seven shots for Bates (5-6-4, 1-5-4).
ENDICOTT 2, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Morgan Hubert opened the scoring on a pass from Madison Webster for the Gulls (9-4-5, 3-2-4 Commonwealth Coast) and Riley Rischitelli added an insurance goal from Ella Morgan as they blanked the Nor’easters (9-5-3, 4-2-3) at Biddeford.
Sydney Gillingham for UNE and Endicott’s Jacqueline Ruggiero each made four saves.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA: Aliyah Boston of South Carolina and Caitlin Clark of Iowa were unanimous picks for The Associated Press preseason women’s basketball All-America team.
Boston led South Carolina to its second national championship and swept nearly ever major award last season. Expectations are high once again for the top-ranked Gamecocks and Boston, who was on all 30 ballots from the national media panel that selects the AP Top 25 each week.
Seniors Haley Jones of Stanford, Ashley Joens of Iowa State and Elizabeth Kitley of Virginia Tech were also selected for the team as was sophomore Aneesah Morrow of DePaul.
MEN’S BASKETBALL: Manhattan fired head basketball coach Steve Masiello two weeks before the start of the season, the school announced.
He has been replaced on an interim basis by assistant RaShawn Stores, a former Manhattan player under Masiello.
Manhattan had been picked to finish second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the preseason coaches’ poll. Jose Perez, a fifth-year senior, was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year.
Masiello coached for 11 seasons at the New York school, making the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015. The Jaspers failed to finish over .500 the past season seasons.
FOOTBALL
GEORGIA: Safety Dan Jackson is facing foot surgery that could end his season.
Coach Kirby Smart said that Jackson, tied for sixth on the team in tackles, won’t be available for No. 1 Georgia in Saturday’s game against Florida in Jacksonville.
Jackson, a junior, has 16 tackles with one interception and a forced fumble.
Smart said he didn’t know when Jackson will have the surgery.
Jackson opened the season playing with Christopher Smith as the starting safeties in the Bulldogs’ base defense. Freshman Malaki Starks has since taken the starting role in the base defense and Jackson has played as the third safety in passing situations.
Smart said Georgia will have to find a replacement for Jackson in the “dime” package.
“With our depth at defensive back, David Daniel-Sisavanh is a guy that will step up and play,” Smith said, adding defensive backs Javon Bullard, Tykee Smith and JaCorey Thomas also regularly practice at safety.
“So, it’ll be done by committee with all those guys,” Smart said.
Jackson began his career as a walk-on and carved a role on special teams before earning a spot in the secondary.
