Is this what “more democracy” looks like? Four referendums on complex topics, drafted by members of the Maine Democratic Socialists of America, behind closed doors without any public input. Detailed proposals were placed before voters by only 1,500 signatures, 2% of eligible voters. And, if there are unintended consequences, the terms of the proposals cannot be changed except by yet another referendum.
The proposed Charter Commission governance changes (Question 2) are touted as promoting more democracy, more transparency and more accountability. But many key elements of this proposal were part of a surprise governance structure developed by former Commissioner Nasreen Sheikh-Yousef behind closed doors. Does this reflect more democracy, more transparency and more accountability?
Portland voters should think about this long and hard before casting their ballots. Vote “no.”
