Vowing to take a closer look at Maine’s income tax and its impact on the lower-middle class, Democrat Sally Cluchey won the state House seat for District 52, according to unofficial results from Tuesday’s election.

District 52, newly drawn this year, includes the towns of Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond. Previously, it covered Bath and was represented by Rep. Sean Paulhus.

Cluchey beat out independent Peter Lewis, a member of the Bowdoinham Select Board and small business owner, by more than 1,200 votes, taking 62% of the ballots.

“I am humbled and grateful for all of the support I’ve received throughout this campaign,” Cluchey wrote in a Wednesday email. “The people who opened their homes and shared their stories, the volunteers who gave their time and effort, and the voters who waited in line to cast their ballots all made this possible. To my neighbors in Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond, I promise that I will work hard every day on behalf of you and your families. Thank you for this trust you have placed in me. I won’t let you down.”

As chairperson of the Bowdoinham Food Pantry, Cluchey said she hopes to find creative bipartisan solutions to alleviate the pressure felt by Mainers as the cost of food, fuel and property taxes as prices rise across the board.

“I am excited to head to Augusta next week for my orientation and eager to get to work in support of our communities and all Mainers,” Cluchey said.
