Steph Baxter scored 18 points as Bates held on to beat St. Joseph’s 77-76 in men’s basketball at Lewiston on Wednesday night.

Jahmir Primer and Stephen Ward scored 13 points apiece for Bates (1-1), which led 42-27 at halftime.

Ward had eight rebounds. Simon McCormick had 11 points.

Griffin Foley led St. Joseph’s (1-2) with 15 points and five rebounds. Teagan Hynes added 12 points and five rebounds. Drew Shea had 10 points and five assists.

UM-FARMINGTON 84, U. OF NEW ENGLAND 61: Zachary Mickle had 19 points and six rebounds and Terion Moss put up 17 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Beavers (1-0) over the Nor’easters (1-3) in Farmington.

Jack Kane had nine points, three rebounds and four blocks for UMF.

Ray Evans led UNE with 11 points and two rebounds. Ant Moynihan added 10 points and three rebounds.

UM-AUGUSTA 78, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 73: Jack Pyzynski scored a game-high 29 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and four steals, but the Seawolves (5-2) fell to the Moose (3-3) at the Augusta Civic Center.

Elijah Smith led UMA with 17 points and four rebounds. Yonas Medfu had 13 points and four rebounds. Jalaughn Jackson had 11 points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Maurice Hodge Jr. added 11 points and five rebounds.

DeSean Cromwell had 11 points and nine rebounds for SMCC.

(3) HOUSTON 83, TEXAS SOUTHERN 48: Marcus Sasser scored 20 points and Jarace Walker added 19 to help the host Cougars (4-0) rout the Tigers (1-4).

(9) ARKANSAS 71, SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 56: Ricky Council scored 19 points as the Razorbacks (3-0 beat the visiting Jackrabbits (2-2).

(20) MICHIGAN 91, PITTSBURGH 60: Jett Howard scored 17 points as Michigan (3-0) pulled away in the second half for a rout of Pittsburgh (1-2) in the Legends Classic semifinals at New York.

After struggling to get past Eastern Michigan on Friday, the Wolverines struggled at times during the first half before seizing control early in the second.

Howard made 6 of 8 shots, including two early 3s to help Michigan start pulling away and returned after a lengthy rest with the Wolverines holding a 25-point lead before fouling out.

(22) TENNESSEE 81, FLORIDA GULF COAST 50: Olivier Nkamhoua and Josiah-Jordan James each scored 18 points to lead The Vols (2-1) to a home win over the Eagles (2-2).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

U. OF NEW ENGLAND 52, ST. JOSEPH’S 47: Jordyn Franzen had 17 points and 13 rebounds as the Nor’easters (2-2) edged the Monks (2-1) in Standish.

Keagan Dunbar added 12 points and five rebounds for UNE. Gabby Soter chipped in nine points and four rebounds off the bench.

Angelica Hurley led St. Joseph’s with 13 points and seven rebounds. Hannah Talon had 11 points and five rebounds and Nina Howe had nine points, three rebounds and five assists.

SOUTHERN MAINE CC 62, UM-AUGUSTA 52: Ashleigh Mathisen had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists and Jaylyn Bartolome added 14 points  to help the Seawolves (4-1) beat the Moose (2-3) at the Augusta Civic Center.

Maddy York had 13 points and five rebounds for SMCC and Tara Flanders had eight points and 13 rebounds.

UMA’s Mariah Dunbar had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Kaeti Butterfield added 11 points and six rebounds and Sydney Farrar had 10 points and four rebounds.

HUSSON 69, SOUTHERN MAINE 41: Bailey Donovan had 22 points, 16 rebounds and three blocks as the Eagles (2-2) cruised past the Huskies (1-2) at Bangor.

Makaelyn Porter added 13 points for Husson.

Ashlee Aceto and Vanessa Vaughan each had 10 points for USM, with Aceto grabbing six rebounds and Vaughan seven.

(7) IOWA STATE 88, NORTHERN IOWA 85: Ashley Joens scored 26 points, Stephanie Soares had 23 and the Cyclones (3-0) survived a scare in their first road game of the season, holding off the Panthers (2-1).

Emily Ryan’s 3-pointer with 2:03 remaining gave Iowa State an 86-85 lead after Northern Iowa had erased a 13-point deficit early in the fourth quarter. Ryan added a jumper in the lane 48 seconds later to extend the lead.

Northern Iowa had a chance to tie it, but Kayla Laube’s 3-point attempt hit off the side of the rim with 1 second left.

(10) NORTH CAROLINA STATE 96, CHARLOTTE 48: Madison Hayes and Jada Boyd each scored 15 points as the Wolfpack (4-0) routed the 49ers (2-1) at Raleigh, North Carolina.

(13) NORTH CAROLINA 93, SOUTH CAROLINA STATE 25: Destiny Adams had 23 points and eight rebounds, Alyssa Ustby added 14 points and 10 rebounds and the host Tar Heels (3-0) eased by the Bulldogs (0-4).

(15) LSU 101, HOUSTON CHRISTIAN 47: Angel Reese had 29 points and 15 rebounds and the Tigers (4-0) scored 100-plus points for the fourth straight game, beating the visiting Huskies (1-2).

(19) MARYLAND 70, DAVIDSON 52: Diamond Miller scored 19 points with six assists and four steals, Abby Meyers added 14 points and Maryland (3-1) beat visiting Davidson (1-2).

(23) MICHIGAN 99, WESTERN MICHIGAN 67: Laila Phelia and Emily Kiser scored 25 points each and the Wolverines (3-0) beat the Broncos (0-3) for their  20th straight home win.
