I am honored to have been elected as the new State Representative for House District 133 in Biddeford. I have big shoes to fill, as I will be replacing our Speaker of the House Ryan Fecteau, who we are so proud of!
Though I had the good fortune to run unopposed, I still appreciate the support I received throughout the community. I also appreciate the relationships I have already built with Biddeford’s legislative delegation: Senator-Elect Henry Ingwersen, Representative Erin Sheehan, and Representative Traci Gere. This tight bond will enable us to more effectively advocate for our community.
We have a lot of work to do. We must ensure that the state funds education at 55 percent and that revenue sharing is maintained, if not increased, so that we can keep property taxes down. We need to make housing more affordable, supporting new construction while maintaining important safety regulations. We need real, practical solutions to combat the climate crisis, and we should invest in infrastructure that will make our community more resilient to the impacts of the crisis. The opioid crisis continues, so we must make more treatment and recovery resources available while also intercepting traffickers. We need to protect the civil rights – which include reproductive freedom – of all Mainers. And we need to do more to help Maine families weather the rising cost of living as the world changes around us.
To succeed in making progress on all of these issues, we need a healthy democracy. I am proud of Maine’s elections and the people who administer them, especially all of the amazing workers who made things run so smoothly at Tiger Gym on Election Day. Thanks to them, our elections are free and fair.
The right of citizens to have a voice in how they are governed is critical, which is why I have been vocal about protecting democracy against voter suppression, election subversion, and political violence from extremists. Our ability to address critical challenges as a community depends on it.
This is why, whether you were happy to support me or wish I’d had opposition, if you ever have a problem or a question regarding state government, I will work as hard as I can to help you. A great outgoing state representative was known to say, “as long as I’m in office, you’ll have someone in Augusta who will respond to you.” I took that to heart, and I make the same commitment to you.
