Ashamed. That is what the Biden administration and its Justice Department ought to be after it determined that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin-Salman, should be granted immunity in the lawsuit against him for his complicity in the murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
The lawsuit was a last-ditch effort by his widow to seek some sort of moral closure to Khashoggi’s torture and murder. The Justice Department’s reasoning for dropping the lawsuit was that bin-Salman was “the sitting head of government and, accordingly, immune” from the lawsuit.
This action sets a very bad precedent for bad actors (Putin comes to mind) who will not even be taken to court for their misdeeds. Truly a sad day for an administration that purportedly holds up human rights as a moral policy of the United States.
