The Valentine’s Day bandit, in my humble opinion, is a goodwill ambassador. In this time of political division, unrest and multiple concerns, the placement of the bright red hearts is refreshing, something to look forward to. And it’s an adventure to find all of them.
While I appreciate a Valentine’s gift from my husband and enjoy sending Valentine cards to grandchildren, the Valentine bandit’s hearts also bring me – and, I’m sure, many others – joy. To place large hearts at the top of the 18-story condo building under construction in Portland, a banner with a heart at Fort Gorges in the middle of Casco Bay, as well as on windows of shops, businesses, hotels, restaurants, bars and even the lobsterman statue, must take an inordinate amount of time, navigation and masking tape.
According to a local TV newscaster, this yearly tradition has been going on since 1976. Hoorah for the Valentine bandit, and a “heartfelt” thanks to them and any helpers they may have. Hope this wonderful tradition continues always.
