SACO — Police here say  man and a woman from Somerset County were taken into custody early Monday, after they allegedly damaged a hotel room in Saco and threatened to kill police officers.

A 7-year-old child in the hotel room with the couple was taken to the police department while officers contacted the Maine Department of Health and Human Services and the child’s other family members, said Deputy Police Chief Corey Huntress. The family relationship between the child and the two adults in the hotel room was not disclosed.

Police were called to the Ramada Inn at 352 North St. at about 4:25 a.m. Monday, Feb. 20.

“On arrival police officers found the occupants in room 221 breaking windows and other items inside of the hotel room.” Huntress wrote in a news release. “When officers attempted contact with the occupants they claimed to be on hallucinogenic drugs, barricaded the hotel room door and claimed to have weapons and chemicals, threatening to kill officers.”

“Officers contained the area and started negotiations with the occupants in the hotel room, learning there was an adult male, adult female, seven-year-old child and a dog inside of the hotel room,” Huntress continued. “Officers evacuated other occupants in portions of the hotel to contain the incident, keeping others safe.”

Southern Maine Special Response Team, Emergency Management, Saco Fire Department, and additional Saco Police officers responded.

Negotiations with the occupants continued throughout the incident to try and peacefully resolve the matter, Huntress said.

“During these negotiations with the occupants, officers heard through the hotel room door a struggle taking place inside (and) statements made led officers to believe they needed to intervene immediately,” Huntress wrote. “Entry was forced into the hotel room where the male and female occupants were taken into custody without further incident. The female was initially transported to an area hospital, while the male was taken to the Saco Police Department.”

Police made arrangements for the child, who was not physically injured. A dog in the hotel room was taken to an area animal hospital for injuries received while the two adults were allegedly damaging the room, Huntress wrote.

Timothy Nichols, 34, and Nicole Davis, 40, both of Hartland, were each charged with Class C felony aggravated criminal mischief and misdemeanor charges of creating a police standoff and endangering the welfare of a child. Nichols and Davis were taken to York County Jail in Alfred. Nichols’ bail was set at $2,000, according to a corrections officer. Davis’s bail was not initially available.

People charged with crimes are presumed innocent until found guilty in court.
