We are now in the liturgical season of Lent. Lent involves readjusting our priorities and passions for something beyond the moment, greater than the immediate, and altering our mindset. Most people are familiar with the traditions of sacrificing indulgences and self-satisfying behaviors. But Lent is more than what we let go of or do without.

Lent is about what we embrace and rekindle. Certainly, we can sacrifice chocolate or time-wasting pursuits. However, what do we replace those with? We can stop character assassination and begin encouragement. We can stop disparaging and begin praising. This seems insignificant, but baby steps begin the journey.

As I blessed the ashes on Ash Wednesday, it occurred to me that the ashes came from the palm branches of last year’s Palm Sunday prior to Easter. 2022 was a challenging year. The act of preserving those palm fronds in 2022 was an act of faith. It was simple but profound. I will be here next year to burn these fronds to produce the ashes for Ash Wednesday. Several coworkers wept as we shared that awareness.

Realigning your mindset is simple and profound. Change the world by changing yourself. If this is to be a beautiful world, you and I must promote beauty. Since we have a chance of surviving this moment in time: What will next year be because of you? During Lent of 2023, find a different reason or justification for your existence.
