Fifth-seeded South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete got goals from Seth Cloutier, Tobey Lappin, Ben Stanley and Roan Hopkins and advanced to the Class A boys’ hockey semifinals with a 4-0 victory over fourth-seeded Scarborough on Friday night at USM Ice Arena.

The Red Riots (11-8) will place No. 1 Falmouth or No. 8 Lewiston on Tuesday at Cross Insurance Arena.

BASKETBALL: Will Davies of Thornton Academy, Silvano Ismail of Cheverus and Brady Saunders of Brewer are the three finalists for Mr. Maine Basketball, and Sierra Carson of Oxford Hills, Lizzy Gruber of Gardiner and Elise MacNair of Old Orchard Beach are the finalists for Miss Basketball, the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches announced Friday.

The two awards recognize the best senior players in Maine. Winners will be announced next Friday at the MABC banquet in Bangor.

WORLD CUP: Mikaela Shiffrin ‘s hunt for a record-tying 86th career victory was extended for at least another day, as she finished in fourth in a super-G won by Austria’s Cornelia Huetter in Kvitfjell, Norway.

Huetter edged Elena Curtoni of Italy by a mere 0.01 seconds.

Lara Gut-Behrami of Switzerland was 0.12 back in third, and Shiffrin was 0.16 behind.

Shiffrin needs one victory to match Ingemar Stenmark ’s victory total on the all-time list. The Swede competed in the 1970s and 80s.

Shiffrin’s next race is a downhill on Saturday.

NASCAR: Chase Elliott injured his leg in a snowboarding accident in Colorado on Friday and will miss this weekend’s NASCAR race at Las Vegas.

Hendrick Motorsports said NASCAR’s most popular driver was scheduled to have surgery Friday night.

Josh Berry will drive the No. 9 Chevrolet on Sunday in place of Elliott.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Orlando’s Jonathan Isaac has another season-ending injury – this time a torn adductor muscle.

Isaac had surgery on Friday to repair the muscle and will miss the remainder of the regular season, the Magic said.

He played in 11 games this season, after missing 2 1/2 years following a serious knee injury and other setbacks.

• Former NBA player Anthony Morrow is facing charges of assault on a female, assault by strangulation, communicating threats and second degree kidnapping in Charlotte, North Carolina.

According to Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s office arrest records, Morrow was arrested on Feb. 10 and released two days later on a $15,000 bond.

Morrow, 37, is a Charlotte native who was named North Carolina’s “Mr. Basketball” in 2004 while playing at Charlotte Latin High School. He went on to play college ball at Georgia Tech and spent nine seasons in the NBA, mostly as a backup, serving stints with the Warriors, Nets, Hawks, Mavericks, Pelicans, Thunder and Bulls.

PGA: Kurt Kitayama handled windy conditions at Bay Hill to shoot a 4-under 68 and open a two-stroke lead at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando, Florida.

Kitayama was at 9 under overall, two shots ahead of Jordan Spieth (70). Xander Schauffele (70) and Corey Conners (66) were three behind.

Jon Rahm, the first-round leader, was at 3 under after a 76, his highest score since a 76 in the third round of the PGA Championship last May. His final five holes included a double bogey, three bogeys and a birdie.

n Carson Young posted a 5-under 67 and built a four-shot lead going into the weekend at the Puerto Rico Open.

Young, a PGA Tour rookie, was at 14-under 130.

Another rookie, Nico Echavarria of Colombia, also shot a 67 and was tied for second with Paul Haley II (66).

LPGA: Danielle Kang avoided distractions during a rain-soaked day and shot a 9-under 63 for a one-shot lead after the second round of the Women’s World Championship in Singapore.

Kang was at 10-under 134.Allisen Corpuz (65), Hyo Joo Kim (67) and first-round leader Elizabeth Szokol (71) were tied for second. Three others, including American Nelly Korda, were at 8 under.

TENNIS

DUBAI CHAMPIONSHIPS: Daniil Medvedev ended Novak Djokovic’s 20-match winning streak by beating the world’s top-ranked player, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the final in the United Arab Emirates.

The third-seeded Medvedev will face defending champion Andrey Rublev in an all-Russian final. Rublev, the No. 6 seed, advanced by beating Alexander Zverev, 6-3, 7-6 (9).

ATX OPEN: Katie Volynets reached her first WTA semifinal by taking big leads in each set and holding off reigning NCAA singles champion Peyton Stearns to win 7-5, 6-3 in a matchup between a pair of 21-year-old Americans in Austin, Texas.

Another American, No. 4 seed Danielle Collins, grabbed 11 of the last 12 games to eliminate Anna Kalinskaya, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

SOCCER

GERMANY: Marco Reus scored again in a 2-1 win over Leipzig that lifted Borussia Dortmund three points clear at the top of the Bundesliga.

Reus converted a penalty in the 21st minute and Emre Can got the second goal in the 39th for Dortmund’s 10th win from 10 games across all competitions in 2023.

Bayern Munich, which was leading on goal difference, can reclaim the top spot on Saturday with a win at relegation-threatened Stuttgart.
