Ryan Kuzmich scored 7:38 into the third period and the University of New England beat Plymouth State 2-0 in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s hockey tournament on Saturday in Plymouth, New Hampshire.
Chad Merrell added an empty-net goal for the Nor’easters with 22 seconds remaining.
UNE improves to 20-6-2 and advances to play Utica in the quarterfinals on March 18. Utica, United Collegiate Hockey Conference champion, received a first-round bye. Plymouth State ends 23-4-1.
Billy Girard made 28 saves for UNE, while Brendan Brawley had 23 saves for Plymouth State.
CURRY COLLEGE 1, BOWDOIN 0: Mark Zhukov scored 11:02 into overtime and the Colonels (23-5-1) beat the Polar Bears (15-11-3) in the first-round of the NCAA Division III tournament in Milton, Massachusetts.
Curry advances to face Hobart, which received a first-round bye, in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Alex Kozic had 48 saves for the Polar Bears, while Reid Cooper stopped 37 shots for Curry College.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
AMHERST 4, COLBY 0: The Mammoths (25-4) scored four goals in the third period to beat the Mules (18-8) in the second round of the NCAA Division III in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Amherst advances to face Hamilton, a 2-0 winner of Adrian, in the semifinals.
Maeve Reynolds scored two goals in the first five minutes of the third period to give Amherst the lead. Alyssa Xu and Daly Carley also scored for the Mammoths.
Paige Bolyard made 26 saves for Colby.
WRESTLING
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jake Craig and Jake Peavey of the University of Southern Maine earned All-America honors with top-six finishes at the NCAA Division III championships in Roanoke, Virginia.
Craig, a freshman from Skowhegan, placed fourth in the 125-pound division. He reached the semifinals before suffering his first loss, then won a consolation match but lost again in the third-place match.
Peavey, a senior from South China, finished with a 3-3 record for sixth place in the 285-pound division.
INDOOR TRACK
NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jaidyn Appel of Portland won her second straight NCAA Division III indoor track title with a victory in the high jump Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama.
Appel, a senior at Tufts, was the only athlete to clear 5 feet, 8 3/4 inches. She then broke her own school record of 5-9 3/4 by clearing 5-10 before missing three attempts at 5-11 1/4.
BASEBALL
MARYLAND 5, MAINE 4: Ian Perturtz led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run, and the Terrapins (7-7) beat the Black Bears (3-8) in College Park, Maryland.
Maine loaded the bases in the top of the eighth and the top of the ninth but was unable to score.
Myles Sargent had two hits, including a double and a home run, scored twice and drove in two runs for Maine.
GROVE CITY 7, ST. JOSEPH’S 3: The Wolverines (10-3) scored four runs in the top of the ninth to beat the Monks (2-6) in Lakeland, Florida.
Luke Stevens drove in two runs, while Jack Moltenbrey had three hits and scored a run for St. Joseph’s.
COLL. OF NEW JERSEY 8, SOUTHERN MAINE 2: The Huskies (0-2) fell behind 7-0 in the fourth inning and lost to the Lions (2-2) in Winter Haven, Florida.
Chris Reeder and Justin Marcario each drove in two runs for TCNJ. Ben Amon allowed two runs and struck out eight in six innings.
Chris Quigley, Kyle Douin and Janek Lukzsa each had two hits for USM.
COLBY, RPI SPLIT: Clint Flippo drove in three runs as the Mules (3-1) won the opener of a doubleheader against the Engineers (4-3-1) 9-8 in Troy, New York.
Rylan Wade pitched a five-inning no-hitter, walking two and striking out five as RPI won the second game, 3-0.
SOFTBALL
NEW MEXICO STATE 9, MAINE 1: Jillian Taylor had two hits, three RBI and scored twice as the Aggies (11-7) beat the Black Bears (4-11) in Fresno, California.
Izzy Nieblas had an RBI double for Maine.
UTAH TECH 12, MAINE 1: Hannah Hughbanks drove in three runs to help the Trailblazers (14-6) beat the Black Bears (4-12) in Fresno, California.
Mariah Pearson scored on a fielding error in the third inning for Maine.
COLBY SPLITS WITH MIT: Colby (1-1) bounced back to win 10-1 in the second game of a doubleheader against the Engineers (3-1) in Waterville.
Jackie Hill and Chloe Wilcox each had three hits, including a double, and two RBI for the Mules. Amanda Cabral and Abby Orso each added two hits and two RBI.
Colby lost the first game, 6-3.
MEN’S LACROSSE
UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 15, PLATTSBURGH STATE 10: Jordan White had five goals and an assist as the Nor’easters (3-3) beat the Cardinals (2-2) in Biddeford.
Colin Watt added three goals and an assist, while Andrew Lawrence had two goals and two assists. Sam McGregor chipped in with two goals and an assist, and Shea Fogarty also scored twice.
BOWDOIN 17, HAMILTON 16: Jason Lach scored four goals as the Polar Bears (1-1, 1-1 NESCAC) held on to beat the Continentals (1-2, 0-2) in Brunswick.
Sam Raye-Steiner had three goals and an assist, while Patrick Fitzgerald added three goals for Bowdoin. Ethan Barnard also scored twice, and Sam Powell had a goal and an assist.
TRINITY 19, BATES 12: Harrison Ike had six goals and an assist as the Bantams (1-2, 1-1 NESCAC) topped the Bobcats (0-3, 0-2) in Hartford, Conn.
Will Masterson had four goals and two assists for Bates.
ST. JOSEPH’S 19, NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 2: Tim Goodfellow collected three goals and four assists, while Tiger Hopkins had two goals and nine assists as the Monks (1-5) cruised to a win over the Pilgrims (0-5) in Standish.
Matt Denman and Max Lucy each scored three goals, and Will Levesque and Xavier Michaud scored twice for St. Joseph’s.
RIVIER 20, SOUTHERN MAINE 9: Connor Eck had six goals and three assists to lead the Raiders (2-1) over the Huskies (0-4) in Nashua, New Hampshire.
Nick James led USM with four goals and an assist. Schuyler Wetmore posted two goals and three assists.
WILLIAMS 15, COLBY 8: Jesse Shapiro led the Ephs (2-1, 2-0 NESCAC) with six goals and an assist as they defeated the Mules (1-2, 0-2) in Waterville.
Jack Goller and Nick Hassan both scored three goals for Colby. Henry Popko had two.

BOWDOIN 11, HAMILTON 8: Sophia Sudano and Emelia Krakora each scored three goals as the Polar Bears (2-1, 1-1 NESCAC) beat the Continentals (0-2, 0-2) in Clinton, New York.
Lauren Blake added two goals, while Fiona Bundy had a goal and two assists.
WILLIAMS 10, COLBY 8: The Ephs (3-1, 1-1 NESCAC) scored five goals in the fourth quarter to beat the Mules (0-3, 0-2) in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Ally Franz had three goals, while Annie Eddy scored twice for Colby.
TRINITY 12, BATES 2: Molly McGuckin had four goals and an assist, while Casey Ward added three goals and the Bantams (3-0, 2-0 NESCAC) cruised past the Bobcats (2-3, 0-2) in Lewiston.
Lauren Wong and Annie Lowenstein scored for Bates.
ST. JOSEPH’S 21, NORWICH 7: Lydia Dexter had six goals and two assists as the Monks (2-1) cruised past the Cadets (1-1) in Northfield, Vermont.
Bridget Collins and Megan Mourmouras each added three goals and two assists.
