BIDDEFORD – The city is once again looking for a new city clerk, following the resignation of Kristy Cyr.

Cyr, a longtime city employee, took her oath of office as Biddeford City Clerk Nov. 21.

She submitted her resignation, effective Wednesday March 29, earlier this month, when a new offer presented itself, she said in her resignation letter.

“It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my resignation from the City of Biddeford City Clerk position,” wrote Cyr, in part. “This decision has come with a lot of thought; I was in no way looking for another career. An opportunity recently presented itself and the offer was too significant to pass up. I have enjoyed serving the City of Biddeford for the past 18 years and I have grown a lot professionally. This city has allowed me to grow my career and I will always be grateful for that. A big thank you to everyone for your support and kindness.”

Assistant to the City Manager Danica Lamontagne said Cyr has accepted a job offer from another community.

Cyr did not respond to an email seeking comment.

Cyr had been the city’s tax collector for seven years, and a city employee for 18 years before being named city clerk. She replaced Carmen Bernier, who retired in October after working 15  of her 28 years with Biddeford as its city clerk.

Biddeford offers a 36-hour, four-day work week; the salary for the position is posted at $76,000 – $100,000 annually, along with an array of benefits. A review of resumes is to begin April 4, according to the city’s website.

According to the job description, the city clerk manages all voting and elections for the city. The clerk is responsible for managing the operations of city council meetings including preparing agendas and taking minutes and is the liaison between the city council and the public.

The city clerk also provides duties required by Maine law and the city charter, including overseeing the records of births, marriages, and deaths, as well as assisting in the enrollment of voters and overseeing the applications for candidates for local office, according to the job description. As well, the city clerk oversees local and state elections within the city.

The job description states that a bachelor’s degree in public or business administration is preferred, or other applicable field, with 3-5 years of clerk experience. Lamontagne said the position will be covered by in-house personnel until a candidate is hired.
