Ahmed art show winner
Westbrook High School student Zina Mohamed Ahmed won the $100 first place prize in the Westbrook Woman’s Club’s annual student art show.
Second place went to Baraa Alaalem, $75; third place, Benedicte Mangaza, $50; and honorary mention, Maryjane Pepperjack, $25.
Club members Roberta Morrill and Carolyn Leavitt presented the monetary awards, prize ribbons and certificates to the winners.
The club’s next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4, at Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St. A speaker will give an update on what’s happening at the Rock Row business center. Guests and new members are welcome and do not have to live in Westbrook.
Palm weaving
Adults are invited to stop by St. Hyacinth Church, 268 Brown St. in Westbrook, any time between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Palm Sunday, April 2, for a palm weaving event.
“Palm weaving is a long-lasting European tradition found in many countries, and today, many Catholics continue to enjoy renewing the art that has been passed down through the generations. There are simple designs that even beginners can try, including a classic cross, flower designs, spirals, a crown, braids, hearts and others,” a press release from the church said.
Palms distributed on Palm Sunday are sacramental and they cannot be thrown away, according to the church. Many are returned to the church to be burned and used for ashes on the following year’s Ash Wednesday. Now parishioners have another option.
There is no charge for the session, palms will be provided, and instruction will be offered. Bring a pair of scissors.

Dyhrberg at seniors meeting
Musician Tom Dyhrberg will perform at the Westbrook Senior Citizens meeting at 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 3, at the Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.
Coast Guard vet to speak
Retired Coast Guard veteran Kevin Battle will speak when the Stephen W. Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion meets for a dinner at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 5, at 17 Dunn St., Westbrook.
Battle, also retired from the South Portland Police Department, will speak following the meal and before the post monthly business meeting.
50 Years Ago
The American Journal reported on March 28, 1973, that Westbrook High School teacher Walter Hayes was to speak at the Westbrook Senior Citizens meeting and Flora Hunter was in charge of refreshments.
