TURNER — A school bus collided with a dump truck Monday morning at Upper Street and Center Bridge Road.
Police and school officials said none of the middle and high school students aboard the Maine School Administrative District 52 bus was seriously injured.
Tripp Middle School Principal Jana Mates was near the intersection when the crash occurred, according to school Superintendent Carl Medd. Mates immediately pulled over to call 911 and began to tend to the students and drivers.
Turner Rescue crews responded as did deputies from the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office.
“We are grateful for the first responders who arrived quickly and ensured that the area was safe, given the high traffic volume that goes through that intersection in the morning,” Medd said. “All students were transported to their respective schools and were checked by administrators and other school staff. Two high school students were dismissed to their parents for medical evaluation. All middle school and high school parents were notified within about 15 minutes of the accident.”
The Sheriff’s Office was investigating the crash with the assistance of the Maine State Police Commercial Vehicle Unit.
Police said indications were that the bus driver, approaching the intersection, did not see the oncoming dump truck and pulled into its path. The two collided at the intersection, leaving the bus damaged to the extent that it needed to be towed from the scene.
