Hannah Lappin drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning and finished with three RBI as defending state champion Biddeford earned a 6-5 win over Scarborough in a Class A South softball game Thursday in Biddeford.

Scarborough (3-1), ranked No. 1 in the Varsity Maine poll, took a 5-4 lead with a run in the top of the seventh. The Tigers (3-1) tied it in the bottom half when a run scored on Julia Pearl’s fielder’s choice grounder, then won it on Lappin’s fly ball.

Lappin’s two-run single in the fifth gave Biddeford a 4-3 lead. Scarborough tied it in the sixth.

Biddeford pitcher Charlotte Donovan recorded nine strikeouts.

Jamie Kemper notched three singles for Scarborough. Losing pitcher Natalie Moynihan had a double, an RBI single.

WELLS 7, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 2: Savannah Tardiff started a three-run first inning with an RBI double, and Ava Kreie and Delani Brown each drove in two runs as the Warriors (4-3) beat the Raiders (3-4) in Wells.

Wells pitcher Kylie Corbett scattered 10 hits and took a shutout into the seventh before giving up two unearned runs, driven in by Carlin Galligan and Abby Ontengco.

FREEPORT 8, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 4: Vanessa St. Pierre and Sadie Todd each recorded a two-run double to help the Falcons (2-5) top the Patriots (1-5) in Gray.

Norah Albertini and Celia Cobb both hit two singles for Freeport. Devon Russell pitched five innings to earn the win.

Maisie Lerette and Heather Nevells each had two hits for Gray-New Gloucester, and Cadence Norris belted a double.

BASEBALL

KENNEBUNK 1, THORNTON ACADEMY 0: Quinn MacDonald allowed just two hits, and Drew Sliwkowski singled home James DiGiovanni in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Rams (3-2) a win over the Trojans (3-3) in Kennebunk.

Thornton pitcher Owen Critchley gave up three hits and struck out six.

MARSHWOOD 1, WINDHAM 0: Tyler Hussey singled home the game’s only run in the first inning, and Noah Fitzgerald held Windham to one hit as the Hawks (3-2) shut out the Eagles (2-3) in South Berwick.

Fitzgerald struck out 10 and walked one.

Brady Harvie took the loss despite allowing just four hits.

SANFORD 1, BIDDEFORD 0: Zach Kassim and Ben Gill combined on a one-hitter as the Spartans (4-1) shut out the Tigers (1-4) in Biddeford.

Kassim walked seven and struck out six over six innings. Gill struck out two in a perfect seventh inning.

Biddeford pitcher Gavin Haggett fanned nine and allowed six hits.

FREEPORT 5, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 3: Aidan Heath hit a two-run single as the Falcons (4-3) scored four runs in the first inning en route to a win over the Patriots (1-5) in Gray.

Zane Aguiar pitched six innings for Freeport, allowing three hits and striking out nine. Liam Emmons earned the save. Will Maneikis got two hits of Freeport’s six hits.

Max Kenney and Jake Maschino each had two hits for GNG. Losing pitcher Braeden Chute struck out seven.

POLAND 15, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 1: The Knights (3-3) produced 13 runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away from the Seagulls (1-4) in Poland.

Poland hammered out 11 hits, including two by winning pitcher Sam Paladino. Aiden MacFawn led the Knights with three hits and four RBI.

Losing pitcher Riley Provencher had two hits.

WAYNFLETE/NYA 2, TRAIP ACADEMY 1: Cooper St. Hilaire pitched six strong innings and got two of his teams six hits as the Flyers (6-0) edged the Rangers (2-6) with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, at Portland.

SACOPEE VALLEY 6, LAKE REGION 1: Dylan Capano allowed just three hits and struck out six over five scoreless innings as the Hawks (5-0) defeated the Lakers (2-3) in Naples.

Caleb Vacchiano and Grady Cummings produced key hits for Sacopee during a four-run third inning. Cummings also pitched the final two innings.

Brock Gibbons struck out eight for Lake Region.

GORHAM 11, CHEVERUS 10: Ellie Gay’s third goal of the night was the winner as the Rams (3-2) beat the Stags (4-2) in overtime at Gorham.

FALMOUTH 16, YORK 4: Sloane Ginevan scored reached the 100-goal mark for her career with her sixth goal of the game as the Navigators (3-1) cruised past the Wildcats (3-2) in Falmouth.

Lucy Taylor contributed five goals for Falmouth. Keira Alcock scored twice, and Patty Riley turned away nine shots.

Abigail Armlin, Grace Clayton, Ava Fontaine and Sophia Luchette all had one goal for York. Tia Spenlinhauer made 10 saves.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

MARSHWOOD 14, BIDDEFORD 5: Kevin Cougler totaled five goals and three assists to lead the Hawks (4-1) past the Tigers (5-1) in South Berwick.

Tommy Demeroto added four goals and two assists. Milo Closson chipped in with two goals and an assist.

FALMOUTH 17, WINDHAM 3: Joey Guerrette scored seven goals as the Navigators (4-1) rolled past the Eagles (3-3) at St. Joseph’s College.

Falmouth also got four goals and an assist from Giovanni Guerrette and three goals and an assist from Hayden Davis.

WIndham goalie Reed Wescott made 20 saves.
