The University of Maryland-Baltimore County scored five runs in the sixth inning and held on for a win over Maine in an America East baseball game on Friday in Orono.

Christian Easley had a home run, double and single with two runs scored and two RBI to lead UMBC (23-20, 12-7 AE).

For the Black Bears (23-16, 13-3), Nick White had a double and single with two runs scored and two RBI.

USM SWEEPS: Jason Komulainen, Arlo Pike and Brogan Searle-Belanger hit RBI singles during a four-run seventh inning as Southern Maine (17-17, 12-4 Little East) completed a doubleheader sweep with an 8-4 win over Castleton (17-20, 6-10) at Castleton, Vermont.

Pike had three hits and two RBI in Game 2. Tom Vesosky also had three hits, and Searle-Belanger drove in two runs.

In Game 1, Cam Seymour hit an RBI double and a two-run homer to lead the Huskies to a 7-5 win. Owen Sullivan got the win, striking out eight in 3 1/3 innings while allowing one run and one hit, after Bryce Afthim started with four scoreless innings.

SOFTBALL

MAINE SPLITS:  Grace McGouldrick of Gorham set the University of Maine single-season record for stolen bases with 31 as the Black Bears (13-36, 4-14 America East) split a doubleheader with Bryant (17-27, 5-12) in Orono.

Maine’s Jasmine Gray was 3 for 4 with two RBI in Game 1 and Anna Margetis also drove in two runs, but Bryant erased a four-run deficit, rallying for a 5-4 win. McGouldrick had a stolen base in the second inning to set the record,

In Game 2, Alysen Reith pitched a three-hitter and Maine scored three runs in the fourth inning for a 3-0 victory. Katie Jo Moery broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single. Mariah Pearson followed with a two-run single.

FOOTBALL

TRANSFER: Former Michigan State quarterback Payton Thorne is headed to Auburn.

Auburn announced the signing of the two-year starter, giving new Coach Hugh Freeze an experienced quarterback to boost a passing game that ranked among the nation’s worst last season.

Thorne went 16-10 as a starter for the Spartans.

He has thrown for 6,494 yards with 49 touchdowns against 24 interceptions.
