Portland-born musician Kurt Baker moved to Spain a number of years ago but comes home to visit and play shows frequently. Case in point, you can see him at a Portland brewery next month.

His next album,”Rock ‘N’ Roll Club,” is due out this fall, and Baker has just released the first track, called “Anchors Up.”

He got the idea for the song during lockdown, when he would frequently sit by the window with his guitar to get some sunlight. This sparked what Baker called a “happy, upbeat melody.”

Baker sent the demo to his mentor, Little Steven, who offered helpful feedback, suggesting to Baker that the song was too happy-sounding.

You can hear for yourself how that advice translated into a power punk and pop gem.

Here’s “Anchors Up:”

See Kurt Baker perform live on June 17 at Bunker Brewing in Portland.
