HIGH SCHOOLS
Elizabeth Littell and Eliza Stein each scored three goals to lead Portland to a 9-7 win over Sanford in a Class A girls’ lacrosse game Thursday at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
Phoebe Knoll added two goals and an assist. Lilah Green scored the other Portland goal, and Eva Smith made six saves for the Bulldogs (9-5).
Emerson Tolpin paced Sanford (8-6) with four goals. Kaylynne Hessler contributed two and Violet Quinn had one.
BOYS’ LACROSSE: Blake McPherson tallied six goals and two assists, and Tobias Perkins had four goals and one assist to power Windham (9-5) to a 14-8 victory over visiting Gorham (5-9).
Haden Pelletier led Gorham with four goals. Cole Chasse added two.
• Caden Ouellette sparked Gray-New Gloucester/Poland (6-8) with two goals and five assists as the 26ers cruised to a 12-5 win over Edward Little (3-10) in Gray.
Ben Powell added three goals and Noah Schaeffer scored twice for the 26ers.
BASEBALL
EASTERN LEAGUE: Tyler Hardman hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning, Jasson Dominguez added a three-run homer in the eighth, and the Somerset Patriots overcame a 7-0 deficit to beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 11-7, in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Somerset feasted on Portland’s bullpen after five scoreless innings by Sterling Sharp, who allowed just two hits and one walk. Sea Dogs relievers issued nine walks over the next three innings, including three with the bases loaded.
The Sea Dogs built their lead with three runs in the first inning and four in the fourth. Nick Yorke was 3 for 5, Corey Rosier hit a two-run triple, and Phillip Sikes also drove in two runs.
SOCCER
U.S. MEN: Striker Folarin Balogun was among 24 players picked by interim coach B.J. Callaghan for a training camp ahead of the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals and could make his national team debut against Mexico on June 15.
Wingers Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and Tim Weah also are on the roster, along with goalkeeper Matt Turner and outside back Sergiño Dest, among 13 veterans of last year’s World Cup squad. Pulisic, Reyna, Turner and Dest are coming off club seasons in which they sparingly started, and Weah was played mostly out of position.
Balogun committed to the U.S. last month rather than England or Nigeria. He has 20 goals in 36 league matches for Reims in France’s Ligue 1 heading into Saturday’s season finale.
U-20 WORLD CUP: Anderson Duarte’s strike from the edge of the penalty area put Uruguay through to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win against Gambia in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Uruguay plays the United States on Sunday.
COLLEGES
SOFTBALL: Jordy Bahl threw a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts to help two-time defending national champion Oklahoma defeat Stanford 2-0 in its Women’s College World Series opener in Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma (57-1) extended its Division I-record winning streak to 49 games and advanced to play No. 4 seed Tennessee (50-8) on Saturday.
• Rylie West hit a three-run homer and No. 4 seed Tennessee defeated No. 5 seed Alabama 10-5 in the first game of the World Series.
Jamison Brockenbrough and Katie Taylor had two hits and Kiki Milloy scored twice for the Vols (50-8).
HOCKEY
NHL: Patrick Kane underwent hip resurfacing surgery and is expected to miss four to six months.
The extended absence appears to rule out Kane for an NHL training camp but means he may be able to return early in the regular season. He’s due to become a free agent on July 1.
WOMEN’S PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Hilary Knight was the runaway leader in voting for the International Ice Hockey Federation’s first female player of the year award, some six weeks after the 33-year-old captained the United States to the gold medal at the world championship.
Knight received 40.9% of the votes submitted by more than 50 media members, representing 16 countries, and a select group of federation officials. U.S. defender Caroline Harvey was second at 18.2%, followed by Slovakia’s 15-year-old Nela Lopusanova (13.6%).
