I want to introduce my friend, Alicia Johnson, who is running for the Falmouth School Board. Alicia is newer in town, so her name might not be so familiar. When I heard earlier this year that there were openings on the school board, I reached out to her because I knew how deeply involved she was in her previous hometown of Oakland, California. There was a movement to drive funding away from public schools toward charter schools, and she was instrumental in prioritizing public schools. When the teachers in Oakland went on strike, she organized lessons and her home became a “strike school” where parents could bring their children for care and learning, and to deter others from crossing the picket line. She is strong in her beliefs in support of teachers and public education, but she’s also kind and gracious enough to disagree without being disagreeable.
