A mother and her two sons were injured after crashing their ATV in the Oxford County town of Byron on Monday morning.

Elizabeth Wallace, 42, of Bryon was driving her sons, ages 12 and 13, to meet the school bus a little before 7 a.m. when her ATV veered off a steep incline on Dingle Hill Road, hit a ditch and flipped over, the Maine Warden Service said in a news release.

Her 12-year-old son was tossed to the side of the road, but Wallace and her 13-year-old son were trapped under the ATV. None of the them was wearing a helmet, according to Mark Latti, spokesman for the Maine Warden Service.

The 12-year-old was unable to free his mother and brother so he left the crash site and began knocking on doors for help. Three men from Massachusetts were renting a nearby cabin and got on their ATVs after the boy told them what happened.

When they arrived at the crash site, the 13-year-old boy had been able to free himself but Wallace remained trapped. The men were able to move the ATV off Wallace and waited until emergency responders arrived.

Latti said that Wallace was transported by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. She suffered injuries to her pelvis, back and head. One boy suffered a possible back injury and the second boy a head injury. They were all taken to CMMC.

The crash remains under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.
