Regarding the front-page June 10 article about Gov. Mills’ bill to expand abortion access in Maine:

The claim by Republican legislators that most Mainers oppose abortion past 24 weeks is unfounded.

A University of New Hampshire survey, conducted this past February, found that 67% of Maine residents strongly or somewhat approve of abortions past 24 weeks if supported by a doctor. The survey sample was randomly drawn from the Pine Tree State Panel, with a response rate of 31% (786 Maine respondents).

The sample was then weighted on sex, age, education and state region, using the current American Community Survey from the U.S. Census; and party registration and 2020 election results. The survey’s margin of error was plus or minus 3.5%.

This is a valid and independent study of how Mainers saw the focus of this bill in February.
