Five players scored as Cape Elizabeth rolled to a 5-1 win over St. Dominic in a field hockey game on Monday in Auburn.
Shyla McVeigh opened the scoring with a successful penalty stroke. Sophia Chung, Mia Frost, Chloe Synder and Celia White also scored for the Capers (2-0) while goalie Zoe Burgard made eight saves.
For the Saints (0-2), Alana Wheeler scored while goalie Maia Cote made 15 saves.
AUTO RACING
NASCAR: Joe Gibbs Racing announced that Denny Hamlin signed a multiyear extension to keep driving the No. 11 Toyota Camry TRD in the NASCAR Cup Series.
The company said in the release terms of the contract extension will not be disclosed.
Hamlin first drove in a Cup Series race at Kansas in October 2005 and has since made more than 600 starts all for owner Joe Gibbs.
GOLF
RYDER CUP: Ludvig Aberg’s rapid rise in just three months as a pro was capped when the 23-year-old Swede was selected as one of the European team’s captain’s picks for the Ryder Cup against the United States outside Rome this month.
Luke Donald filled out his team by picking Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry and Justin Rose along with three rookies – Aberg, Sepp Straka and Nicolai Hojgaard. Straka and Hojgaard got the call ahead of Adrian Meronk in what was widely seen as Donald’s toughest decision, but it’s the presence of Aberg that will most excite European golf fans.
He turned pro in June when ranked as the world’s No. 1 amateur and after being named the best college player in the United States for a second straight year at Texas Tech. Aberg posted four top-25 finishes in his first two months on the PGA Tour, then headed back to Europe in a bid to convince Donald he deserved a Ryder Cup call-up.
BASKETBALL
WORLD CUP: The Serbian Basketball Federation announced that forward Borisa Simanic has lost one of his kidneys as the result of an injury sustained during a World Cup game against South Sudan.
Simanic has been operated on twice in Manila, the team said. Additional complications presented themselves after the first surgery, team doctor Dragan Radovanovic said, requiring the second procedure on Sunday where the kidney was removed.
Serbia plays Lithuania in a World Cup quarterfinal on Tuesday.
“It was really tough for us when we heard what happened,” Serbian forward Nikola Milutinov told reporters after the team practiced Monday. “First, we didn’t believe it was such a bad thing. It’s really affected us. We’re really praying for him that he’s going to be good as soon as possible.”
Simanic was injured with just under 2 minutes left in Serbia’s win over South Sudan on Wednesday. South Sudan’s Nuni Omot was trying to score under the basket, elbowing Simanic in that process. Simanic yelled in obvious pain, then fell to his knees a few seconds later.
SWIMMING
RUSSIAN PARTICIPATION: Individual Russian swimmers will be allowed to compete in international events, including the Paris Olympics, if they meet a set of “strict criteria” that include not talking to the media, the sport’s governing body said.
The World Aquatics governing body published its criteria Monday for Russian and Belarusian athletes, coaches and officials to return to competition as neutrals after being banned because of their countries’ war in Ukraine. The criteria follow the International Olympic Committee’s guidelines that only individual athletes from Russia and Belarus – no teams – can be allowed to compete in Paris, and that they must not have shown any public support for the war.
World Aquatics said only one Russian and Belarusian athlete will be allowed to enter in each swimming and diving event. They cannot take part in any relays, artistic swimming, synchronized diving, or water polo.
SOCCER
PANAMA: A member of Panama’s national soccer team was hanging out with friends in front of the building where his mother lives, when gunmen in a taxi opened fire, killing Gilberto Hernández and wounding seven others in the country’s violent port city of Colon, police and witnesses said.
Hernández, a 26-year-old defender, was the second member of the national team killed in Colon in the past six years. Authorities on Monday announced the arrest of one suspect in Sunday’s killing.
