The Scarborough Public Library has named Richard “Chip” Schrader as its new director.

Schrader, most recently director of the Louis B. Goodall Memorial Library in Sanford, will begin work on Oct. 1. He succeeds Nancy Crowell, who retired after 45 years leading the library.

“To say I’m shocked and over the moon sounds cliche, but it nearly does justice to how I feel,” Schrader said in a press release. “Nancy is a superstar among librarians, and the staff at Scarborough are known throughout the state for their innovative work. I am honored.”

Schrader’s ability to secure grant funding for a library expansion in Sanford was part of his “appeal” as a candidate, the Scarborough library said in an press release. Scarborough Public Library has been pushing for an expansion for a number of years. A $13 million expansion project failed at the polls last November.
