Tara Zabriskie’s “Defending the Dark,” a short documentary about the importance of preserving dark skies and combating light pollution, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 at the recreation center at Val Halla in Cumberland as part of Prince Memorial Library’s Lawns Gone Wild series.

Southern Maine Astronomers will hold a question and session on light pollution following the screening. The group will also share information on “Globe at Night,” a citizen-led science project for participants to record naked-eye observations of constellations and report the results on a worldwide database.

If the sky is clear enough, Rob Burgess of Southern Maine Astronomers will also take attendees on a laser-pointer tour of visible constellations. The recreation center is located at 60 Val Halla Road.
