Craig Roberts, the coach of the Cheverus girls’ soccer team since 2013, reached the 100 career victory plateau Wednesday when the Stags won at Thornton Academy, 2-1. Roberts has led Cheverus to the playoffs in each of his seasons (with the exception of the COVID-abbreviated 2020 campaign) and to winning records each of the past seven years. Friday, the Stags blanked visiting Portland, 4-0, to make it 101 victories for Roberts.

“You always want to win every game, but for me, especially since those (early) years where we struggled to make the playoffs, it’s been about building a culture where players play for each other and not just with each other,” Roberts said. “Fortunately, for the most part, I’ve had players, parents, assistants and administrators who have bought in on that philosophy so that we’ve established consistency in who we are and why we play. The results sort of take care of themselves at that point if you’re fortunate enough to have talented players. And I do not ever take for granted the players I get to coach. They’re terrific people and players.

“I played for (Coach Glenn) Hutchins at Greely. He passed this past summer and so I’ve been thinking a lot about just how much I learned about soccer playing for him. So I guess if 100 wins is some sort of benchmark, to me it means that I’ve had an opportunity to lead a program that offers players the same opportunities and lessons I had as a player and hopefully it’s a program that he would be proud of.”
