Mauricio Sunderland rushed for three touchdowns as Thornton Academy evened its record at 2-2 with a 37-6 win over previously undefeated Windham in a Class A football game Friday night in Saco.
Sunderland scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter, then made it 13-0 with a 7-yard run in the second.
His 5-yard plunge in the third quarter extended the lead to 27-0.
Harry Bunce had a 1-yard plunge in the second quarter, Henry Kenniston scored on a 4-yard run in the fourth, and J.P. Baez kicked a 32-yard field goal and four extra points.
Windham entered as one of three 3-0 teams in Class A North, but the Eagles were held to one long touchdown in the third quarter. Ezra Foster caught a long pass from Garrett Winslow, raced down the sideline, shook off a tackle from Thornton defensive back Shiloh Thao near the 8 and dove across the goal line for a 69-yard scoring play.
SOUTH PORTLAND 42, GORHAM 18: Easton Healy passed for three touchdowns in the first half and added a short scoring run in the third quarter as the Red Riots (2-2) handled the Rams (0-4) in South Portland.
Matthew Berry had a pair of touchdown catches and added a 41-yard TD run.
Izak Young accounted for all three Gorham’s touchdowns, with two scoring passes and a 4-yard run.
FRYEBURG ACADEMY 48, CAPE ELIZABETH 8: Cohen Carter threw three touchdown passes and Gunnar Saunders scored twice on the ground as the Raiders (3-1) rolled past the Capers (0-4) in Fryeburg.
Freddie Francis, Jagger Helwig and Logan Walton caught touchdown passes, Michael Malia returned an interception 36 yards for a score, and Saunders ran in from 5 and 12 yards.
Cape avoided a shutout when Mike Foley scored on a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter.
BONNY EAGLE 36, SCARBOROUGH 0: Terrell Edwards accounted for four touchdowns as the Scots (3-1) cruised past the Red Storm (0-4) in Standish.
Bonny Eagle opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 56-yard pass from Edwards to Emmett St. Pierre. He later connected with Will Warner for a 51-yard score and had two long TD runs – from 26 and 50 yards.
Colin Moran rounded out the scoring with 1-yard run.
GARDINER 35, EDWARD LITTLE 26: Eli Farias returned an interception 100 yards for the clinching touchdown in the fourth quarter as the Tigers (3-1) beat the Red Eddies (0-4) in Auburn.
Gardiner quarterback Chase Burgess threw touchdown passes to Evan Michaud and Zach Christian.
Bennett DuBois caught three touchdown passes from Kade Masselli, including a 66 yarder in the third quarter. Masselli finished with four TD passes.
FIELD HOCKEY
CHEVERUS 7, THORNTON ACADEMY 0: Lily Johnson posted two goals and two assists, and Lucy Johnson also scored twice for the Stags (6-0) in a win over the Trojans (1-5) in Portland.
Sydney Brunelle, Mackenzie Cash and Sophia St. John each added a goal. Joey Pompeo and Lillian Magda each contributed an assist.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
MARSHWOOD 5, BIDDEFORD 2: Maddy Poitras led the Hawks (2-2) with two goals as they defeated the Tigers (1-5) in Biddeford.
Jackie Arnold, Lilli Hammond and Aoife Kumi each chipped in a goal. Marshwood goalie Lana Emery made five saves.
Anna Smyth got her first varsity goal for Biddeford. Hannah Smith also scored, and Sarah Parks recorded 11 saves.
DEERING 1, PORTLAND 0: Elsa Freeman’s goal with less than two minutes remaining lifted the Rams (2-3-1) over the Bulldogs (1-5) at Deering’s Memorial Stadium.
NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 3, TRAIP ACADEMY 0: Grace Bila scored twice in the first half and set up a second-half goal by Caroline Matusovich as the Panthers (6-0-1) defeated the Rangers (2-5-1) in Yarmouth.
Emily Robbins assisted on Bila’s second goal.
Lily Stuart turned aside 19 shots for Traip, while Sarah Moore made four saves for NYA.
WESTBROOK 2, KENNEBUNK 2: Ava Bolden and Kylie Young scored for Westbrook (0-2-2) in a draw at home against Kennebunk (1-4-1).
BOYS’ SOCCER
BRUNSWICK 1, MT. BLUE 0: Merrick Meardon’s goal in the first half was enough for the Dragons (4-2-1) to earn a win over the Cougars (3-2-1) in Farmington.
Anthony Cooley had seven saves for Brunswick, while Chase Ranger made 10 saves for Mt. Blue.
TRAIP ACADEMY 5, NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 0: Adrian Cunningham and Israel Gonzales each scored twice, and the Rangers (6-1) got four second-half goals to pull away from the Panthers (3-2) in Kittery.
Quinn Alessi also scored, Ivan Blanco had two assists, and Riley McGovern assisted on one goal.
Jack Downs made two saves for the win, while Gavin Thomas stopped 10 shots for NYA.
