Brian O’Halloran, who served as Red Sox GM under Chaim Bloom, has accepted a new position. He will serve as the executive vice president of baseball operations, a source confirmed to masslive.com.
The Red Sox fired Bloom as chief baseball officer last week. A press release sent out that day mentioned O’Halloran being offered a new role but team president Sam Kennedy wouldn’t confirm whether he accepted it yet.
O’Halloran, who grew up in Weymouth, Mass., and is a 1993 graduate of Colby College, first began working for the Red Sox in 2002. He held several different positions before being promoted to the role of GM in 2019, shortly after Bloom was hired as the team’s chief baseball officer.
“We wanted to make sure that BOH knows exactly how we feel about him,” Kennedy said last Thursday. “This guy’s got four World Series rings. He’s an incredible leader in our organization. So we did offer him a position, a different senior leadership, which I’m very, very hopeful he’ll accept and help lead us go forward. And we’ll have more news on that at the appropriate time. I also want to thank him in terms of how he handled today’s conversation.”
The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey was the first to report O’Halloran staying with the organization.
MARLINS: Miami ace and National League Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara experienced right forearm tightness after his rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville Thursday.
“Anybody that you hear forearm tightness you’re concerned, but especially Sandy, who he is and what he means to us,” Marlins Manager Skip Schumaker said before his club’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers Friday.
The 28-year-old Alcantara will return to Miami for additional evaluation. He went on the injured list Sept. 6 because of a right forearm flexor strain and showed no discomfort in subsequent throwing programs and bullpen sessions.
BRAVES: Atlanta placed ace Max Fried on the 15-day disabled list with a recurring blister issue on his left index finger, with the hope that extra rest will have him ready for the NL Division Series.
Fried (8-1) allowed one run on three hits over six innings in a 10-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Thursday night, lowering his ERA to 2.55. But the Braves decided to shut him down for the rest of the regular season.
RAYS: The playoff-bound Tampa Bay Rays have called up 20-year-old minor league prospect Junior Caminero from Double-A Montgomery.
Caminero spent time with both Montgomery and Class-A Bowling Green this season, mostly playing third base while combining to hit .324 with 31 homers and 94 RBI in 117 games.
TWINS: Minnesota placed third baseman Royce Lewis on the 10-day injured list with a strained left hamstring, hoping the standout rookie can heal in time to return for the start of the playoffs.
NATIONALS: Sean Doolittle has decided to retire from baseball after more than a decade pitching in the majors that included helping Washington win the World Series in 2019.
The left-handed reliever spent the bulk of his career with Washington and the Oakland Athletics, earning All-Star honors in 2018.
POSTSEASON: Major League Baseball will have neutral clock operators in the first postseason of pitch timers.
MLB evaluated each team’s clock operators during the regular season and said it will select up to a dozen of the best performers for postseason games, which start Oct. 3.
FRIDAY’S GAMES
BLUE JAYS 6, RAYS 2: Chris Bassitt became the American League’s second 15-game winner and Toronto beat Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, in a matchup of teams holding the top two American League wild-card positions.
Bassitt (15-8) allowed two runs and six hits while striking out eight in 6 2/3 innings. He tied Tampa Bay’s Zach Eflin for the AL lead in wins.
CUBS 6, ROCKIES 0: Seiya Suzuki and Jared Young each hit two-run homers, Jameson Taillon pitched six scoreless innings and struggling Chicago improved its playoff chances with a win at home.
Chicago had lost 10 of 13 but it will remain at least tied with Miami for the third and final National League wild card berth. The Marlins will play the Brewers Friday night. Cincinnati, which plays host to Pittsburgh latr, was a half-game behind the two teams at the start of the day.
Suzuki singled in the opening inning to bring home Chicago’s first run, then tagged starter Noah Davis (0-3) for his 20th homer in the fourth.
YANKEES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 1: Aaron Judge became the first player in Yankees history with two three-homer games in one season, and New York cruised to a victory over Arizona.
Arizona’s five-game winning streak was snapped, and the Diamondbacks’ lead over the Chicago Cubs for the second of three NL wild-card spots was reduced to one game. Arizona dropped to 1-7 against New York teams this season after dropping six of seven to the Mets.
