A Scarborough man suffered life-threatening injuries Friday after he was struck by a truck on Interstate 95 in Waterville, police said.

The unidentified 27-year-old man was struck around 1:30 p.m. by a yellow 2023 GMC box truck driven by a 33-year-old unidentified Hampden man, according to Shannon Moss, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety, in a news release Friday.

The Scarborough man had been driving a white 2020 Hino dump truck and was pulled over into the breakdown lane near Exit 127 prior to the crash, Moss said. After being hit by the box truck, which was traveling south on the highway, the Scarborough man was found by Maine State Police troopers lying in front of his truck, severely injured. He was taken by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to an unidentified Bangor hospital.

State police are unsure why the Scarborough man was in the breakdown lane, and what caused the driver of the box truck to hit him, according to Moss.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Maine State Police Trooper Randy Hall at 207-624-7076, ext. 9.
