Leopold Lariviere

BIDDEFORD — Leopold “Leo” R. Lariviere Jr.,75, of Scarborough, passed away Thursday, Sept. 21, 2023, at The Pine Point Center in Scarborough, Maine.

He was born in Biddeford on Sept. 22, 1947, a son of Leopold Sr. and Marie (Paquette) Lariviere.

Leo was educated in the Biddeford School system, and graduated from Biddeford High School, Class of 1967.

Leo was drafted and entered service in the Army on June 26, 1967. He served in Korea, attained the rank of Specialist E-5, and was discharged from active duty on Feb. 3, 1970. He earned the Expert Rifleman’s Badge, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. Following active duty, he served in the Army Reserves until his discharge on June 25, 1973.

After his discharge in 1973, he worked in various area jobs, and ultimately retired as an electrician from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.

Leo was married to the love of his life, Claire Gagné, for 23 years from June 23, 1984 until her death on April 9, 2007.

Outside of his work-life, Leo had a passion for Freemasonry. He was first involved with the Biddeford Masonic Lodge and later became a member of the Saco Masonic Lodge after moving to Saco. He served in many capacities, and ultimately attained the title of Grand Commander. He and Claire traveled extensively to attend events and functions with the Masons. One of Leo’s favorite phrases when asked about Freemasonry was, “To Be One Ask One.” Leo was a diehard New England Ssports fan and loved watching the Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots.

He was predeceased by his wife, Claire Lariviere, and by one brother, Urbain “Ben” Lariviere.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Lariviere; his two nephews Jeremy Moreau and David Gagne; his three nieces, Michelle Steeves and her husband Chris, Sherri Charland and her husband Eric, and Kimberly Weatherly; by his grandnephews, Crawford Steeves, Aidan Steeves, Gabriel Weatherly and Daniel Weatherly; and by one grandniece, Madison Charland.

Visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2023, at Cote Funeral Home, 87 James St,, Saco.  A Funeral Mass will follow the same day at 1 p.m. at Most Holy Trinity Church, 271 Main St., Saco. Burial will take place immediately following in Laurel Hill Cemetery,  293 Beach St, Saco.
