The Portland Water District is gearing up for an election to fill a trustee seat, with two candidates vying for the position. The race features Nicole Pellenz and Leroy Crockett, both residents of Scarborough, who bring unique backgrounds and experiences to the table.

Nicole Pellenz, a married mother of two, has thrown her hat in the ring. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Maine Water Utilities Association, an organization deeply involved in water resource management. Her extensive background as a banking executive, specializing in municipal finance, spans over two decades.

Pellenz said one of the critical issues facing the Portland Water District is its need to borrow millions annually for infrastructure enhancement and maintenance. Pellenz aims to leverage her financial expertise to help the district attain a coveted AAA borrowing rating. Achieving this rating would “bolster our ability to access low-cost financing for essential projects and the interest savings can be channeled towards ensuring our water system’s reliability, safety, efficiency,” said Pellenz.

“My 13 years of involvement with Maine Water Utilities Association have provided me with the understanding and importance of water resource management and navigating the regulatory landscape,” said Pellenz. If elected as trustee, she says she is eager to apply her knowledge to safeguard the water supply, enhance operational efficiencies, and advocate for the best interests of the Portland Water District, which includes the citizens of Scarborough.

Leroy Crockett is the current Portland Water District trustee representing Scarborough and is running for re-election. Crockett has two children ages 27 and 20. He is an account manager at Troiano Waste Services and Royal Flush. He is a lifelong Scarborough resident he says he is a dedicated volunteer serving Scarborough for over 30 years.

Crockett says he has been volunteering from age 8 and he learned the importance of giving back to the community. He is a former Rotarian president, Scarborough Buy Local past president, current president of the Scarborough Community Chamber of Commerce and he serves on various boards in town.
