Appreciate Main Street gardens

To the editor,

A note of thanks to the organizations and individuals that work together to create the Main Street Gardens. They were fabulous this year and make the town of Kennebunk welcoming and alluring.

It seems that each year they are expanding their territory and their efforts are much appreciated. Many thanks.

Time for Maine to close campaign loophole

To the editor,

Question 2 on this Nov. 7 election asks: “Do you want to ban foreign governments and entities that they own, control, or influence from making campaign contributions or financing communications for or against candidates or ballot questions?”

Why? Because there is a loophole in federal law that needs to be closed. While foreign governments are prohibited from spending money in candidate campaigns, they are still allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money in state referendum campaigns unless explicitly prohibited by state law. Other states have closed this loophole. It is time for Maine to do so, too.

Approving Question 2 preserves Maine peoples’ democratic ability to make laws for the state reflecting our shared values without interference from outside interests. The bill does not prohibit foreign-owned entities from investing in or doing business in Maine, it simply prohibits them from pouring large sums of money into Maine referendums. After all, shouldn’t it be Maine citizens and lawmakers who create the laws under which we choose to live, work and prosper? Eighty-two percent of Maine voters support prohibiting foreign governments from spending money to influence Maine elections.

In addition, Question 2 also reaffirms Maine’s commitment for an anti-corruption amendment to the U.S. Constitution by directing our federal congressional delegation to advance such an amendment. The Maine Ethics Commission would report annually on the initiative’s progress. The proposed amendment would allow for reasonable campaign fundraising and spending limits. To date, 21 other states have already called on Congress to adopt this amendment.

Your consideration of and vote on these matters will be important. Please vote yes on Question 2 this Nov. 7.

Scare tactics won’t work

To the editor,

How stupid does CMP think we are?

They’ve spent millions on ads that try to scare us with dire predictions of how a consumer-owned power company wouldn’t work. They muddy the water with inflated purchase costs and outright lies about how “politicians” would be running the new company.

They think we don’t remember living through CMP’s multi-day power outages, screwed-up billing and, now, the giant rate hikes.

Yes, please, give us more of this! We want to keep the country’s worst power company (for four years in a row) as our provider. We’re scared of change, so just keep those power outages and higher rates coming.

Or maybe we’re not as dumb as CMP thinks we are. Please vote yes on Question 3.
