Wes Piper’s two first-half touchdown runs held up and host Greely stunned Yarmouth, 12-8, in an eight-man, Large School football game Friday night in Cumberland.

The Rangers (3-3) went ahead 6-0 on Piper’s 51-yard TD scamper in the first quarter. He made it 12-0 in the second quarter with a 6-yard dash.

Yarmouth (5-1), the reigning state champion, scored just before halftime on a 2-yard run from Michael McGonagle, but couldn’t rally in the second half.

FALMOUTH 21, MT. BLUE 12: Indi Backman rushed for two touchdowns, then added a clinching 2-point conversion after a late touchdown by quarterback Tres Walker as the Navigators (1-5) beat the Cougars (0-6) in Falmouth.

Two weeks after forfeiting a game against Portland because of a shortage of healthy players, the Navigators scored their first points since a Week 2 loss to Lawrence when Backman broke free for a 31-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

Mt. Blue tied it a 6-6 on a fake punt, as Stevie Galkowski went 60 yards for the touchdown. Falmouth quickly answered, however, as a 14-yard run by Backman and a conversion kick by Peter Kearns made it 13-6.

That margin stood until early in the fourth quarter, when Mt. Blue’s Dane Cousineau scored on a 15-yard run. Falmouth, though, blocked the conversion kick to maintain a 13-12 lead.

Walker then plunged in from the 1 with 2:08 remaining, and Backman’s conversion rush gave Falmouth a 21-12 lead.

THORNTON ACADEMY 14, SOUTH PORTLAND 0: Austin Cole shot through a gap to score on a 36-yard run with 5:33 remaining as the Golden Trojans (4-2) wrapped up a victory against the stubborn Red Riots (2-4) at South Portland.

Thornton took a 6-0 lead with 5:12 left in the first quarter when Xander Cantara hauled in a 19-yard pass from Wyatt Benoit, and that’s how it stayed until Cole clinched it.

After Cole scored, South Portland made its first true threat when Matthew Berry’s long kickoff return was followed by Darius Johnson’s reception to the Thornton 5. But a fumble inches short of the goal line was recovered by Benoit with 3:31 remaining.

A last-minute South Portland threat following a punt ended with an interception inside the 5 with 30 seconds to play.

Brady Inman connected with Logan McVeigh for a nifty catch-and-run that went 71 yards to open the scoring for Cape Elizabeth. Mike Foley added a pair of scoring runs, including a 1-yard TD early in the fourth that gave the Capers a 22-20 lead.

Westbrook threatened for a tying touchdown with less than a minute remaining, but Gio Staples’ pass to Aidan Taylor on fourth-and-goal from the 5 was broken up.

The Hawks also recovered a fumble to stop a Westbrook drive earlier in the fourth.

After Marshwood went ahead 6-0 in the first quarter, Westbrook scored twice in the second. The Blazes took the lead on a 2-yard run by Staples and a 2-point conversion rush by Gavin Tanner, who later scored on a 55-yard run.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 66, MARANACOOK 19: Wes Gallant and Riley Provencher each scored four touchdowns, and the Seagulls (6-0) quickly responded after allowing their first points of the season on the opening kickoff, rolling past the Black Bears (4-2) for another lopsided win in an eight-man Small School game in Readfield.

OOB’s streak of five shutouts ended when Maranacook’s Owen Dunn started the game with a 70-yard kickoff return. By the time the first quarter ended, though, the Seagulls had a 28-7 lead, sparked by Provencher, who scored on back-to-back punt returns of 70 and 80 yards.

Provencher also caught two TD passes from Brady Plante, who completed 9 of 10 passes for 163 yards and three touchdowns. Gallant, meanwhile, rushed for 307 yards and added a TD reception.

Dunn scored all three Maranacook touchdowns, including two receptions from Kody Goucher.
