Recently, I had the unpleasant experience of needing medical services at the Maine Medical Center’s emergency room. I have been to the ER a few times in the past couple of months due to chronic illness issues, and I was unimpressed each time.

Other than the chaotic environment, no rooms to be evaluated or treated in, high noise levels and HIPAA (Health Insurance Protection and Accountability Act) violations, I felt lost to staff and providers. My comfort wasn’t the primary problem; privacy was.

I eventually, on this occasion, was provided with a gurney-type space to lie down on in the hall, where I was then openly evaluated and interviewed with patients and families within earshot to my past and current medical problems. At least one provider acknowledged they were unable to examine me because we were in the hall. This was humiliating and depressing, and generally unsatisfying and frightening.

Something must be done. My heart goes out to staff and nurses regarding their work environment and circumstances.
