GORHAM — The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, an annual event dedicated to raising funds and fostering unity in the battle against cancer, is set to return to Gorham on April 5. Led by George Mageles, this event transcends its fundraising purpose, serving as a beacon of hope for survivors, caregivers, supporters, and donors across Southern Maine.

“We invite everyone in the community to join us in the fight against cancer,” said Mageles. “Relay For Life is not merely a fundraiser; it’s an opportunity for individuals and teams alike to make a tangible impact in the ongoing battle against this relentless disease.”

At the heart of the event lies a schedule with activities designed to inspire, uplift, and honor. “Our Relay For Life event in Gorham will open with cancer survivors and caregivers taking the first lap around the track at the indoor fieldhouse. This emotional time sets the stage for the importance of each participant’s contribution,” Mageles said. The festive atmosphere helps participants make new friends and spend time with old ones. he said. Participants will walk the track with stops at team sites to play games, enter prize drawings, and learn about the many programs and services of the American Cancer Society.

The highlight of the evening is the Luminaria Ceremony of Hope to honor cancer survivors and to remember loved ones lost to cancer. Decorated white bags that contain a light are set out around the track, and after listening to an inspirational speaker everyone takes a silent lap to remember loved ones. “The Luminaria Remembrance Ceremony stands as a profoundly moving moment for all participants,” Mageles said. “It serves as a poignant opportunity to pay homage to those whose lives have been touched by cancer, reminding us all of the unwavering resolve required to continue the fight.”

Relay For Life funds various American Cancer Society programs and services, including free accommodations through The Hope Lodge Program for patients and caregivers traveling for treatment, complimentary transportation via the Road to Recovery program, online support through the Cancer Survivors Network, peer support through the Reach To Recovery Program for breast cancer patients, and affordable appearance-related products via the Tender Loving Care program.

In addition to supporting the programs and services of the American Cancer Society, community involvement and participation in Relay for Life helps fund research by the American Cancer Society. “In a recent year, there were more than 60 researchers employed to conduct cancer research full time and at any one point in time more than 800 researchers throughout the country and across cancer types are being funded by Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society,” Mageles said.

“The moments that touch me deeply usually involve cancer survivors, caregivers, and youth,” Mageles said. “I recall a time when I joined two caregivers as they walked along the track one evening. They had just met at the event and were both very moved by sharing experiences about caregiving that only another caregiver could truly understand. They were very appreciative and thankful to the event leadership and promised to get more involved the next year.”

“Our sponsors and volunteers play an invaluable role in making Relay For Life possible,” said Mageles. “Their unwavering support ensures that critical research and patient support programs receive the funding necessary to provide vital assistance to those affected by cancer.”

“We extend a warm invitation to all to join us, whether through participation, donation, or volunteering,” Mageles said. “Together, we possess the collective power to effect change and make a tangible difference in the lives of those grappling with cancer.”

Looking ahead, Mageles envisions continued growth and impact for Relay For Life events not only in Southern Maine but also beyond. “Our community is marked by its passion and dedication,” he said. “By expanding our reach and bolstering our mission to combat cancer, we can truly make a difference.”
