The Scarborough High School Girls Indoor Track Team clinched the Class A Championship title through unwavering dedication, strategic training, and exemplary teamwork, and on March 6, the Town Council recognized the team and its coaches for winning the 2024 State of Maine Class A Girls State Indoor Track Championship.

The council passed a resolution March 6 recognizing the team, and highlighted the achievement of sophomore Laurel Driscoll for breaking the school record for the mile by running 5:06;43 — that beat her earlier record of 5:13 set in December with the previous record before that set in 2007 — and being the team’s lead scorer with 20 points.

“It’s an incredible achievement,” Town Council Chair Nick McGee said. “Years of hard work and dedication paid off. Their families, their friends and our community are so very proud of their accomplishments. I hope this is only the beginning of even greater success for these kids. Go Storm!”

“We were led by sophomore distance runner Laurel Driscoll who scored 20 points, she was runner-up in the mile and third in the 800 and 2 mile,” Coach Curry said. “Senior Kyleigh Record was the 800 runner-up and fourth in the mile scoring 13 points while senior Bailey Stoddard-Baughman added a third-place finish in the 55m hurdles and a fourth-place effort in the triple jump”

Curry said they got a surprise fourth place finish from junior Maiya Marquis in the shot put and sophomore Isabella Harmon placed third in the pole vault and fifth in the high jump. Junior Caroline Benson also scored 2.5 in the pole vault tying for fifth place.

In addition, Curry said, “Bangor also did not score as many points in the 200, 400 and 800 as they were projected to which was also pivotal to our win.”

Despite setbacks along the way, including a loss at the SMAA Championship last year, the team remained motivated and focused on their ultimate goal. “As a sport with multiple events, camaraderie among the athletes is more of a challenge,” Curry said. “This group of athletes put the team in teamwork, supported and encouraged each other during workouts and meets on their journey to winning the Class A title.”

Not only team members but also “the coaching staff is a huge factor in contributing to the team’s success,” Curry said. “Our coaches our great at instructing and giving our athletes the tools to be the best they can at their event. We are always helping them build their confidence at practices and meets to help them believe they are strong and able to achieve their personal goals as well as the goals of the team.”

Coach Curry said the athletes were dedicated to their respective training this season. The coaches devised plans for each of the events to peak at the championship meets. The girls also did strength and conditioning throughout the season to prevent injury.

The coaching staff’s role in the team’s success included their dedication to providing technical guidance and fostering a winning mindset, Curry said. “Our coaches are instrumental in equipping our athletes with the tools they need to excel in their events. We instill confidence in our athletes, helping them believe in their abilities and strive for both personal and team goals.”

Kyleigh Record, a senior, said she was proud of her team’s achievements. “This season was fantastic. We all put in so much effort, and it paid off. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish in outdoor track.”

Maezy Gleason, another team member, echoed Record’s sentiments. “Winning states was a special moment for our entire team. We plan to carry this winning attitude into the outdoor season and aim for another victory.”

Amelia Caruso said the collective effort that propelled her and her team to victory. “It wasn’t a one-person show; it was a team effort. Everyone believed in and supported one another, and that’s what defines our team.”

Looking ahead, the team is determined to build upon their success and continue their winning streak into the outdoor season. “We will maintain our momentum and employ the same strategies to pursue the outdoor state title,” Curry said.
