One child was killed and three other people were injured Saturday afternoon when two cars collided on Route 2 in Rumford, according to local police.

The Oxford County Regional Communications Center received a 911 call at about 3:13 p.m. Saturday reporting a two-vehicle, high-speed collision in the vicinity of 1125 U.S. Route 2 in Rumford, about a mile west of the McDonald’s restaurant, according to a post on the Rumford Police Department’s Facebook page.

Emergency workers from the Rumford Fire Department, MedCare Ambulance and the Rumford Police Department were dispatched to the scene. Before they arrived, however, a game warden and a nurse found an unresponsive 8-year-old boy and immediately began lifesaving measures.

Emergency workers confirmed all four individuals involved in the crash had suffered potentially life-threatening injuries, according to the post.

Ambulances from Mexico and Bethel took the injured to Rumford Hospital at 420 Franklin St. The boy died at the hospital from his injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicated a 2016 Subaru Impreza operated by Matthew Kellogg, 42, of Hopedale, Massachusetts, and carrying his two sons, ages 8 and 5, was eastbound on U.S. Route 2 when it collided with a 2005 Volvo S80 sedan operated by F. Michael Piveronas of Rumford, who was westbound. There were no other passengers inside the Volvo, according to the post.

Route 2 was closed to traffic and rerouted.

Local and state police, firefighters and public works crews responded. Specialists from the Maine State Police, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s, and a representative from the Oxford County District Attorney’s Office, were called in to assist with the crash reconstruction investigation.

The 5-year old was later taken by paramedics from Rumford Hospital to a Portland hospital for further emergency treatment, and Kellogg was expected to be taken to a Lewiston hospital Saturday evening. Both sustained life-threatening injuries, according to the Facebook post.

Alcohol is suspected to have been a contributing factor in the crash, according to police.

Route 2 was reopened to traffic at about 6:20 p.m. Saturday.
