The Scarborough branch of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be closed for at least four weeks beginning Saturday while damage from a 2023 winter storm is repaired.

A roof drain above the office broke on one of the coldest days of 2023, sending water cascading into the interior of the office. Staff in the building at the time ensured customers were safe and moved electronics out of range of the water, according to Emily Cook, spokesperson for the Secretary of State.

Cook said there has not been any threat to the health of staff or customers since the leak. The same branch was closed temporarily last May for mold remediation and similar work will be done this year to make sure the branch continues to be a safe environment, she said.

Branches in Portland, Springvale, Kennebunk and Topsham will remain open for walk-in and appointments. AAA Northern New England locations in Portland, South Portland and Biddeford will be available for some services, including renewals of IDs and Class C licenses that do not require name, photo or restrictions changes.

Customers do not need to be AAA customers to access services at those locations.
